AI Has Not Made Computer Science Assessment Obsolete. It Has Made Verification Essential. Written by Shreyas Rane
Last fall, I assigned a programming project I had used for years. Several students turned in working code far faster than I expected, and the output was correct. So I asked a question I have asked a hundred times: “Why does this algorithm work?”
The room went quiet. What happens if the input changes? What is the time complexity? Students looked back at their screens. The solutions were strong. The understanding was harder to find.Generative AI did not create the gap between a correct program and a student who can account for it. That gap has always existed. But AI has widened it and, more importantly, made it easy to cross without anyone noticing. A student can now produce a clean, correct, well-commented solution to a typical assignment in seconds. The finished program tells me less than it used to.

For those of us who teach computer science, this is not a reason to panic, and it is certainly not a reason to abandon rigor. It is a reason to move the thing we grade. The question is no longer mainly 'Did the student produce working code?' It is 'Can the student verify, explain, adapt, and defend it?'

Meet #IMPACTFellow Dr. Marcus Borders, a learning innovation specialist who supports educators and administrators with blended learning experiences, personalized coaching, coding, and computer science experiences in K–12 environments. Read his full profile: buff.ly/6p0aSuJ
Marcus believes that computer science education should include every student, not just the ones who happened to get placed in CS elective courses. By embedding computer science directly into the school schedule, he creates opportunities for students to learn the basics of CS, build their CS identities, and make informed decisions about whether to continue pursuing it.

When Students See Themselves in Computer Science, Written by Riya Nathrani Let me tell you about the question that changed how I teach.
It was midway through our AI unit and my high school class was exploring how image classifiers work, running photos through a pre-trained model and watching it label things with confidence. One of my students raised her hand and asked:
"Who decided what counted as a correct answer when they trained this thing?"The room got quiet. I started to answer, then caught myself, because the honest answer was:
Not anyone who looked like most of us in this room.We spent the next twenty minutes going off the lesson plan, talking about training data, about whose images get included, about why tools built thousands of miles away often don't reflect the faces, places, and languages of the Pacific. We talked about what it means to build AI from datasets that have never heard of the Mariana Islands. It was the best class discussion of the year. And at the end of it, my student said:
"Okay, so can we build something better? Like, something that actually works for our community?"
That question became the backbone of our spring semester.

Meet #ResponsibleAI Fellow Lisette Antigua, a high school computer science teacher who introduced AI tools into her classes as a way to help her students with senior capstone projects. Read her full profile on The Voice: buff.ly/l3Ut1nG
Lisette believes in helping her students make informed decisions about the role AI plays in their work. AI tools are just that—tools—and she’s seen firsthand how valuable they can be in building up student confidence and encouraging risk-taking. With the support of AI, they were willing to take bigger swings, and more often than not, those bold attempts paid off. “Students did not just create better apps—they began believing that they actually could get this done.”

Meet #ResponsibleAI fellow Tarquinn Curry, a teacher helping to shape equitable approaches to computer science and artificial intelligence in K–12 education. Read his full profile here: buff.ly/f4V8t85
In a robotics class last year, Tarquinn ran a week-long design sprint that used Teachable Machine to turn webcams into gesture detectors for student-built robots. Students tested their models on their classmates, logging mistakes on shared spreadsheets. They quickly noticed that most mistakes involved students with darker skin tones or in lower-light settings, so they added samples of each to their dataset, which made their accuracy skyrocket.
