On this day in 1963, a Black Baptist church in Birmingham became a target of racist violence. That day, Klu Klux Klan members planted a bomb, which detonated inside the 16th Street Baptist Church. The explosion killed four girls—Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair.

On this day in 1907, Pope Pius X issued the encyclical "Pascendi Dominici Gregis," which classified Modernism as "the synthesis of all heresies." It was followed by the introduction of an anti-Modernist oath in 1910, which was required to be sworn by all priests of the Catholic Church.
