Correction: racing to results was always pointless. If AI prevents academic fiefdoms, I, for one, welcome our robot overlords.

A government struggling with problems at home discovers the political value of having a foreign enemy, settles on Canada, turns trade grievances and border tensions into patriotic outrage, watches the media amplify every provocation, and then discovers that a fake crisis can become very real.

The "humans" in that sentence aren’t the kids! If students predictably use AI to avoid effort, that’s not a surprising discovery about adolescent nature. It’s a design problem for the adults building the incentives. Kids learn what the system actually rewards. Related: medium.com/@csferrie/fo...

People out here making fun of teenage boys for their high taper fades not knowing how old-school cool it is. Here's a student with Robert Millikan circa 1930, building electroscopes to detect cosmic rays, who looks like he jumped out of a 2026 barbershop window ad.

Treating quantum physics as a recipe is not treating it as meaningless. A recipe means something through what it lets us do. The further demand for what the formalism "really means" assumes that successful practice must conceal a unique ontology behind it. That's the assumption that needs defending.

We're mixing sociology and metaphysics here, and assuming that a solution in one is going to sort out the other. Why aren't people converging? That's easy: the don't have shared goals. Progress in each camp leads to contradictory designations.

How many researchers whose work genuinely requires quantum mechanics as part of their toolkit do you think have ever been produced? I'll guess millions. How many have thought about interpretations at all? Generously, thousands. Not sure the rest would even accept an implicit label.

I used to pay $600 and now enjoy a "100% savings." How much am I paying? In the new math, here's how you figure it out. $600/$600 = 1×100% rise. So if the price is $600 and drops to $600, that's a 100% savings.

When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it. Anyway: fund basic research.

More on ARC job cuts & restructure: ARC’s spending $374k on consultants for organisational “review” & “planning & development”. They’re also spending $765k on “risk management”. That’s $1.1 million on consultants being spent over 1 year. Un. Believable. Slow clap, ARC.
