Hoooly crap, the Middlesex & Suffolk MA state senate race is ... Lander vs Brownsberger with a difference of 3 votes??? That is wild. #MAPoli

Hey, mastodon, and esp my friend @therisingtithes! Is this "Trinidad folktale" familiar? It was in an assigned reading for my summer class, an excerpt from a 1992 book. Feels totally possible to me that it could be BS, particularly given the time period and […] [Original post on mas.wrong.tools]

FOLKTALE : WISDOM OF THE MEDIATOR
Trinidad

Once upon a time there was a poor devout man with an old,
blind mother and a bitter, barren wife . His life was miserable ,
so each morning he rose early and went to the temple to pray
for the blessing of God to relieve his family's suffering.

After twelve years of prayer, he heard a voice -- the voice
of God. "What one thing do you desire?” “I don't know, " he
said. "I really didn't expect you to ask. Do you mind if I go
home and ask my mother and my wife? ”

After receiving permission, he ran home , and first met his
mother.
"Son , if you will ask God to restore my eyes so that I may
see again , you will never be indebted to me for anything."

Then the man went to his wife and told her of God's promise. "Forget your mother; she is old; she will soon close her eyes for the last time . Ask for a son who may care for us, and perhaps bring us wealth."

The mother was listening , and she came with her cane and
began to beat the wife . “No , it must be my eyesight. " The wife
fought back, pulling her hair, and a terrible fight ensued.

The poor man ran from the house to a wise adviser, an old
man who had mediated many conflicts , and he told him his
dilemma . "My mother wants eyesight , my wife wants a son ,
and I, I wish for a bit of money so we can eat everyday. What shallI ask? Whose needs come first?"

The adviser thought for a moment , then he answered:
"Ah, my friend , you must not choose for any one
of your family alone , but for the good of all. Although you may ask only one
thing of God, ask wisely. Tomorrow morning you shall say...Screenshot of a pdf of the next page of the book. The text, from page 44 of "Conflict: Creative or Destructive Dynamics?" continues with the rest of the advice from the mediator, as follows:

'Oh Lord, I ask nothing for myself; my wife seeks nothing for herself; but my mother is blind , and her desire is, before she dies, to see her grandson eating milk and rice from a golden bowl.'

(Dorson 1975, 511-13, abridged )

Kinda obsessed with the native columbines. I have several plants that are now old enough to reliably produce blossoms in sufficient quantity that I think they'll continue spreading with less explicit intervention on my part. Went out and took another couple of photos this afternoon.
Close up of a native columbine flower in shade. The outer blossom is a pinkish-orange ish color. The inside has yellow pollen and stamen. The plant has very sparse green leaves.Close up of the columbine from below, so the delicate stamens and pistils are more clear but it's also a lot less colorful against the bright blue sky (with some clouds and electric wire visible).Another closeup of the columbine flower, with street in the blurry background.

Thought I'd share this quick pic I snapped of a native columbine flower I've been fostering next to a street tree. There are lots of columbine flowers, but the red ones with yellow insides are native to MA. #flowers #bloomscrolling #gardening
Columbine flower, which is kinda trumpet-shaped with three long petals that curve out at the bottom. The trumpet faces downward, and there are 3 trumpets per flower. This columbine flower is a pinkish-orangeish-red on the outside and yellow inside. It sprawls outward over a sidewalk and crosswalk in this pic. There are several flossoms in the background, including ones that haven't opened yet and are still greenish. The stalks are quite gangly, and leaves are sparse.

Screenshot of an email which reads:

Dear Somerville City Council, Mayor Wilson, and beloved city staffers,

So many of our neighbors are impacted by ICE kidnappings and violence. ICE has made it unsafe for remaining immigrants to go to work, school, or go about daily life. This has knock-on financial effects for people in Somerville regardless of immigration status, although obviously it is vital to protect our immigrant neighbors in this chaotic time. Many of my neighbors are unable to make rent this winter, and it's unsafe for them to relocate (even if they had other safe housing options).

I suggest that Somerville put a new eviction moratorium in place, as elected officials are preparing to do in Minnesota, until such time as we can guarantee that ICE will not be able to kidnap any more people from Massachusetts streets.

Particularly since we are entering a time of budgetary input in Somerville, now seems like a great time to have this discussion and make plans to back our moral commitments with our money. Adding to the budgets of the Office of Housing Stability, Somerville Office of Immigrant Affairs, and food security work in the city seems only sensible, as part of this effort.

I look forward to seeing y'all next week at the finance and council meetings.

Best,

Crystal M. Huff

One CVS is subtitled "CVS is your one stop shop." The other CVS is subtitled "Photo Quality Guaranteed." The Ben & Jerry's is subtitled "Takeout - Delivery." A nearby Healthworks does not have a branded mark, just a generic green dot. It is subtitled "Less busy than usual."A white screenshot with "Saved - Notifications - Messages" across the top. Not for nothing, but this is the first time I've ever actually seen CAO Lammis Vargas in any live form in Somerville. I'm still irritated that we have a CAO before we have a revised charter. :P #Somerpoli

Also, everyone's protest signage is great, but I'm not sure anyone can top this sign from 2017, after the Charlottesville murder of Heather Heyer via nazi car. (This was not my sign, to be clear -- it was held by someone near me at a Boston protest against homophobic nazis.)
A white sign with large black letters in all capitals:
"NOT TODAY SATAN."
The two As in SATAN have two red eyes in each, as though KKK white hats.
You can just see two hands holding the sign at the edge of the frame of this pic.

Not for nothing, but the city of Somerville posting excitedly to social media about the Braille printer tonight is A WHOLE LOOK. The machine was purchased over a year ago but never used! This ADA coordinator has also (within the past month) been publicly […] [Original post on mas.wrong.tools]
Post to Facebook by the official City of Somerville social media account. The only text in the post preview appears to be "10 min. ago." The post is a photo of a smiling white woman with grey hair holding some Braille-embossed papers in front of her. She is in an office setting next to a desk. There is a computer in the background behind her, and the computer is next to a IRIE BrailleTrac 120 desktop Braille embosser which is in white, green, and grey plastic.

Today I learned a bunch about map projection stuff for my GIS course. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Map_projection DID YOU KNOW that Florida uses two different map projection systems for different parts of the state??? This kinda blows my mind. (See image […] [Original post on mas.wrong.tools]
A map of the continental United States that demonstrates the TYPE of map projection used in each state (or section of state) when mapping it. The map is in green and red segments, so far as I can tell, although the legend also says there's a yellow portion. Most states, even if there are lines to show different portions of the state, are all in one color. A few, however, are mixed colors.

For example, Florida uses Lambert Conformal Conic Projection (in red) for the western part of the state (as that's better for distances that are wider in the east-west directions), but uses Transverse Mercator Projection (in green) for the southern and east-most parts of the state (because that's better for distances that are lengthy in the north-south directions).

I'm still learning all this stuff, so I'm not sure how better to describe this in order to be accessible, but I hope that helps.

My cat, Carol Danvers, is very very silly. She does this thing where she twists around and pets her own head and sticks her back legs straight out and flips over (sometimes falling off furniture) when she sees us looking at her and she wants treats. This pic […] [Original post on mas.wrong.tools]
Black and white kitten sitting on the bottom shelf of a bookcase with her head upside down, back legs sticking out straight off the shelf, front paws curled up under her chin like a dog's. Her tummy is somehow facing up toward the ceiling. Behind her is my painted mural of books (unfinished). The background color of the wall is yellow. The books in the mural are all sorts of colors.
