Denmark is best in EU in getting workers back into jobs (twice the average rate). They also do tons of RCTs to find out what works and apply behavior science. Can’t say it’s causal, but it’s an interesting correlation at least.

Oh wow, this is really great work. Recent results on PCGs allowed much more efficient MPC preprocessing (among other things) using somewhat new assumptions. Apparently, these assumptions are too strong. Congratulations to the authors on their IACR grant slam of breaks :)

Absolutely sure we won't. I'm just thinking that worldwide we'll see more investments into this, so globally the decline won't be as severe 5 years from now. It's sound economic policy to invest into this, if you have the human resources.

And you get the best of our university graduates because education is free in most of Europe and we didn't stop them from emigrating. Are we now gonna set up a spreadsheet to check who benefited most?

We pay less for drugs because of how our Healthcare systems are set up. Basically the people who determine pricing here are a little less corrupt.

Money and people will primarily shift elsewhere. Other countries want to have those results and monetize them to the same extent. If more talented Europeans stay in Europe, there's ultimately more money here to support that research.

Carsten Baum @cryptocarsten.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
"Research advances everyone" is true only if results can be used by everyone as in cryptography. But in particular in medical research they can't due to patents etc. It primarily benefits the countries where the research can then be monetized. Those countries will now just be different ones.

Carsten Baum @cryptocarsten.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
Of course Europe should spend more on research, make starting business more attractive and find ways to keep our most talented people on the continent. But that's a different topic.

Carsten Baum @cryptocarsten.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
Lol no. It's money being spent to advance the position of the US compared to other countries. Who will lose is primarily the US universities and it's economy. And, due to that, primarily US citizens.

Carsten Baum @cryptocarsten.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
Sorry but that is just US exceptionalism arrogance at the highest level. They are developed in the US because the business model of the US is to attract the most educated from other countries. That research can and will happen elsewhere.

Endowments or much bigger philanthropic support. That is not a thing in Europe.

Carsten Baum @cryptocarsten.bsky.social · 03/05/2025
Sure but quite a few US universities have huge endowments and are basically hedge funds with an Anthropology department. Agree with you on changing existing agreements though. That's just Trump admin doing Trump admin stuff.

Working in Denmark, this has recently become policy here as well (agreed by all funding agencies and the government). And it makes sense here at least (in my opinion), as universities are doing the craziest excel voodoo with grant overheads.
