This is a wildly irresponsible false dichotomy from The Wall Street Journal and a good example of manufacturing consent. Could you imagine if a major US news outlet wrote “while many Americans say Russia doesn’t need to invade Ukraine, the Black Sea does play a big role in their self defence”

I’ve advanced to another level of having furry art framed on my wall. Once again, thank you very much to @karbunart.bsky.social for the art!

Imo, the only times the humanoid body plan has convergently evolved—at least as far as I can tell—is with two-toed and three-toed sloths. They are plantigrade, (nearly) tailless with long limbs, flat faces, front-facing eyes, and lack pointed ears.

Yesterday I saw a purple martin mobbing a merlin! I definitely don’t see that every day. Also two birds with names that my autocorrect wants capitalized… #birds #birding

I really lucked out today on shorebirds. I’m no photographer, but I’m quite proud of the photo I got of that killdeer pulling an earthworm out of that mudflat. 1: solitary sandpiper 2: least sandpiper 3: killdeer 4: spotted sandpiper #birds #birding

Went to a spot where I normally get lots of birds, but today it was weirdly quiet. At least I saw this photogenic grasshopper sparrow. #birds #birding

Yesterday I had really good birding (42 species) considering I live in Ontario and it’s July. I even saw two rare birds—the red-headed woodpecker and Tennessee warbler, which are the 1st and 2nd images. The 3rd image is a yellow-rumped warbler and the 4th is a belted kingfisher. #birds #birding

I’m trying to photograph as many species of #insects as I can. While doing this I have noticed that like 50% of moths can best be described as tiny white speckled toblerones.

Today I finally got my lifer winter wren (Troglodytes hiemalis)! It’s kind of surprising it’s taken me this long to find one of these. #birds #birding

Anyways check out the Finnish band Oranssi Pazuzu if you want to challenge yourself with what I can only describe as black space metal. Especially their album Mestarin Kynsi. I have been autistically listening to the song Ilmestys over and over the past week since this band finally clicked for me.

Yesterday I saw my lifer pectoral sandpiper! I didn’t even know what it was until I looked back at the photos I took of it as it briefly flew around. Two more species until my life list gets to 450! #birds #birding

Takes like this bother me because there’s countless awful bigoted bible passages that you absolutely can use to justify all sorts of shit. And yes there are transphobic bible passages like Deuteronomy 22:5. It’s just inaccurate and dishonest to act like the bible holds up with modern society.

“The Knocking, or The Story of the Sound That Preceded Their Disappearance” by Doldrum is the folklore-inspired black metal concept album about being abducted by subterranean entities I didn’t know I needed. Would recommend.

Recommendation for any metalheads who follow me: check out Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed by Fleshvessel. If you couldn’t tell by the name, it’s quite weird. It’s like avant garde death #metal I guess? It’s hard to describe, but it has some cool symphonic elements and has pianos and saxophones.

Despite everything going wrong for #birding yesterday—considering that it was rainy, windy, overcast, and I had to run back home to get a charging cord for my out-of-battery camera—I still managed to find my lifer eastern bluebird. And at the very last minute right as I was leaving, no less! #birds

Saw lots of greater scaups and common goldeneyes at Frenchman’s Bay in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. Quite a good spot for #birding I would say. Even though it was mostly frozen over and I was there for only an hour or so, I still saw a good 17 or so species of #birds, give or take.

I saw some cool #birds today (and a bonus muskrat). First image is an American black duck I saw by a hotel parking lot of all places, the second is a fairly rare ring-necked duck I saw on a riverside, and the third are some trumpeter swans I saw at a lake. #birding

This album (Éons by Neptunian Maximalism) is certainly overambitious, too long, and is avant-garde enough for me to not casually recommend it. But it sure has a great cover. Definitely looks inspired by the very spiritual and psychedelic-looking thangka art tradition from Tibet, which is cool.
A trippy-looking, incredibly intricate album cover of a monstrous blue deity or demon of some sort. Its clawed hands are clasped together and is grinning.

This is what I mean by weird feet. Very unusual birds. They superficially look like ducks when they’re in the water—especially at a distance—but they’re clearly a rail when you see them out of the water, which I didn’t.

My first lifer of this year was the famously weird-footed American coot (Fulica americana)! I saw these guys at the Port #Whitby Marina on the shore of Lake Ontario in Canada. I really didn’t expect to see any rail species any time soon, so I’m quite happy to see these. #birds #birding
