Well, that sucks: Marvel is shuttering their amazing API. Everyone wants a damn walled garden of data.

THE F4 IS BACK BABY! I'm catching up on the comics of July 9th, and Ryan North's new Fantastic Four #1 with Humberto Ramos, Victor Olazaba, Edgar Delgado, & Travis Lanham is peak F4. It started with an old concept and I thought it'd be a retread. Nope. More super-science and super-heart from North

Marvel's best X-Men team book for most of this year has been Doom's Division. It only has two cast members I'd call X-Men. What it lacks in X-Genes, Yoon Ha Lee & Minkyu Jung make up in a Claremontian ability to juggle a big cast full of international characters with complex motivations and culture

This morning I read another two chapters of REVERSAL by Alex di Campi, Skylar Patridge, Kelly Fitzpatrick, & Hassan Ostmane-Elhaou. An absolutely remarkable and heartfelt comic book with outstanding artwork. Highly recommended to fans of FML (no music, but similar family/supernatural vibe).
The cover of REVERSAL (2025) OGNan interior page from REVERSAL (2025) OGN. An attractive and muscular white man pounds his fist into a table and yells "NOTHING!" An African American boy who has the head and wings of a bird leaves the room, while the white man buries his head in his hands and says "I don't know what you expect of me."

Absolutely disgusted to have bought Polis #1 from AWA, a comic book about a "Protopia" future where not everything is awful, only to reach the back matter and discover some of the "creators" used generative AI. That might be the last comic I buy from AWA. Surprised Mark Russell would headline this

An excerpt from the letters page of X-Men (2024) #13:

The Krakoa era of the X-books was the single best thing to ever happen to the characters and the franchise, and it's been replaced by some of the most painfully generic, worthless and awful content ever to be churned out by Marvel.

One of these months I'm going to be frustrated enough by the script in Spawn that I go in and re-write every caption box and dialog balloon myself, as if I'm bootleg translating a manga. I swear there is a good comic in there.

Will tariffs help US businesses? Fantagraphics VP Eric Reynolds: “It's not like there are paper mills and printing presses just waiting to have the lights turned back on. Even if the tariffs spurred a long term investment ... it would take years and a lot of publishers may well go out of business”
And it’s not just costs, quality, and options that are a challenge when using U.S. printers. If the country’s graphic novel publishers were to start exclusively printing in the U.S., would domestic printers be able to keep up with the potential influx of titles? If the idea behind tariffs is to protect and build local industry, would U.S. printers be able to reap the benefits from an increased tariff rate on books imported from China?

“I just know for our odd business, there's no manufacturing capacity to do books like these in America, and that capacity could not be easily rebuilt. It's less about labor costs than the machines and expertise just not existing to do high end book publishing,” said Josh O’Neill, publisher of Beehive Books.

“I read somewhere that there hasn't been a new paper mill built in the U.S. in something like 35 years, and that the number of existing paper mills is a small fraction of U.S. printing's 20th-century heyday. I wish there was an infrastructure here that tariffs would kickstart, but there just isn't,” Reynolds said. “It's not like there are paper mills and printing presses just waiting to have the lights turned back on. Even if the tariffs spurred a long term investment in paper and printing, with new mills and presses being built, it would take years and a lot of publishers may well go out of business before that bears fruit. It could be quite disastrous.”

This quote from Vault Comics publisher Damien Wassel really puts things in perspective: “Print costs are extremely scale sensitive. Publishers who are producing work with larger print runs will still be able to find margin ... Smaller publishers simply will not have that luxury.”
THE COMICS JOURNAL

Leyla Aker, Director of Publishing at Square Enix Manga and Books, agreed “Aside from tariffs on finished books printed in other countries, the other area of concern would be tariffs on paper, which would have the potential to affect titles printed in the U.S. as well.”

“While this environment may benefit American printers, it will harm smaller American publishers disproportionately in relation to larger publishers,” Damien Wassel, Publisher of Vault Comics, said. “Print costs are extremely scale sensitive. Publishers who are producing work with larger print runs will still be able to find margin without making significant changes to their publishing operations or strategies. Smaller publishers simply will not have that luxury.”

"Maybe there's some post-globalist future in which American manufacturing has been rebuilt, but in the near term I expect this will just make most products far more expensive and less profitable,” Beehive's O’Neill said.
