Truth and reconciliation is not a one-day commitment. Today, the CRTO team and Council participated in Indigenous Awareness Training, taking time to listen, learn, reflect, and better understand our role in supporting reconciliation and cultural safety. Learning is a step. Action must follow
Yesterday, we paused to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we continue the work.

This afternoon, the CRTO team and Council participated in Indigenous Awareness Training, an opportunity to deepen our understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and experiences, and to reflect on our shared responsibility in advancing reconciliation. The training covered topics including Indigenous history, treaties, the impacts of colonialism, and pathways toward reconciliation, cultural safety, and allyship.

Truth and Reconciliation Day is an important moment for reflection, remembrance, and learning. But reconciliation is not a single day on the calendar. It requires ongoing education, listening, humility, and action.

As a health regulator, we recognize the importance of understanding the historical and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous Peoples and the role we all play in supporting culturally safe and equitable environments. Continuing to learn is one small but meaningful step in that journey.

We are grateful for the opportunity to learn, reflect, and challenge ourselves to do better, not just today, but every day.

Every breath matters, especially for older adults living with respiratory and other complex health conditions. On International Day of Older Persons, we recognize the RTs working in hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation, sleep medicine, and community settings www.un.org/en/observanc...
Helping Older Adults Live Well, One Breath at a Time

For many older adults, a simple walk with family, an afternoon in the garden, or a good night's sleep can depend on something we often take for granted: the ability to breathe comfortably.

On International Day of Older Persons, we're recognizing the respiratory therapists who help make those moments possible.

Whether caring for someone recovering in hospital, supporting a resident in long-term care, helping a patient manage a chronic lung condition, or improving sleep and breathing at home, respiratory therapists are there through some of life's most challenging moments. Their expertise helps older adults maintain their independence, improve their quality of life, and continue doing the things they love.

Today, we celebrate older adults and the health professionals who support them every day. The CRTO is proud to regulate the profession in the public interest, helping to ensure Ontarians can have confidence in the respiratory care they receive.

Today we acknowledge the painful legacy of residential schools and honour the Survivors, families & communities who continue to share their truths Reconciliation requires accountability, learning & action. As RTs we're committed to supporting culturally safe & respectful care for Indigenous Peoples
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: Honouring the Past, Committing to the Future

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a time to reflect on the harms experienced by Indigenous Peoples, acknowledge the truths shared by Survivors, and renew our collective commitment to reconciliation through meaningful action.

Like the formal commitments and apologies offered by governments and institutions across Canada, reconciliation requires more than words. It calls for accountability, learning, and a willingness to build relationships grounded in respect and understanding.

As health-care professionals, Respiratory Therapists play an important role in creating safe, inclusive, and culturally respectful care experiences. Every interaction is an opportunity to listen, learn, and contribute to a health system where Indigenous Peoples feel seen, heard, and supported.

Today, we honour the strength and resilience of Survivors, families, and communities. We reflect on our shared responsibility to advance reconciliation, and we recommit to fostering trust, respect, and equity in the care we provide and the communities we serve.

Reconciliation is a journey. It begins with truth, grows through understanding, and moves forward through action.

As healthcare organizations prepare for the months ahead, RTs will continue to support patients through some of their most vulnerable moments, bringing expertise, compassion, and calm when it's needed most. Thank you for the difference you make every day!
As summer winds down, many healthcare teams are already looking ahead to the challenges and opportunities of the months to come.
From supporting people with chronic respiratory conditions to caring for critically ill patients and helping communities stay healthy during respiratory virus season, there's important work happening across the healthcare system every day.

Respiratory Therapists are at the heart of that work, bringing expertise, compassion, and calm to some of the most critical moments in a patient's care journey. Whether at the bedside, in the community, or as part of an interdisciplinary team, RTs make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families across Ontario.

Thank you to all RTs for the knowledge, dedication, and care you bring to your profession and your patients each day.

Your documentation helps tell the patient’s story. No matter the EHR system, Respiratory Therapists must meet professional, legal, and regulatory standards to support safe, accountable care and informed decision-making. documentation.crto.on.ca #RespiratoryTherapy #CRTO #PatientSafety #EHRs
Every chart tells part of the story. Your documentation tells the rest.
Imagine a colleague reviewing a patient's record at the end of a busy shift. They weren't there for the assessment, the intervention, or the conversation with the patient. What guides their next decision? Your documentation.

Whether you're entering notes into a hospital's EHR, a clinic's platform, or another digital system, the technology may differ, but the standard does not.

As Respiratory Therapists, we are responsible for ensuring that every entry in an Electronic Health Record (EHR) meets the same professional, legal, and regulatory standards required of any health record. Clear, accurate, and timely documentation supports continuity of care, accountability, and patient safety.
Because long after the interaction is over, your documentation continues to speak on your behalf.

Starting a new role is exciting. New team. New patients. New opportunities. Before starting, review your registration status. If your Certificate of Registration includes TCLs make sure your employer is aware of them. Review the CRTO Public Register members.crto.on.ca/crto/CRTO/Pu...
After weeks of applications, interviews, and anticipation, you've landed a new respiratory therapy role. You're excited to meet your team, learn new processes, and begin caring for patients.

But before your first shift, there's one important conversation to have.

If your Certificate of Registration includes Terms, Conditions, or Limitations (TCLs), make sure your employer is aware of them.

Being open about any TCLs helps your employer understand your scope of practice, plan for any supervision requirements, and ensure safe, effective patient care from day one. It also helps prevent misu nderstandings and supports a smooth start in your new role.

Remember, your registration status and any TCLs are publicly available on the CRTO Public Register. Sharing this information proactively is part of professional, accountable practice.

✅ Starting a new position?
 ✅ Changing employers?

Take a few minutes to review your registration information and discuss any TCLs before you begin practising.

Because the best workplace relationships start with clear communication, transparency, and a shared commitment to patient safety.

Review your registration information on the CRTO Public Register. If you're unsure how your TCLs apply to your practice, contact the CRTO.

Test your knowledge! When an RT inserts a PICC line, how is it classified under the Prescribed Procedures Regulation? A. Basic prescribed procedure below the dermis B. Advanced prescribed procedure below the dermis Vote in the comments, then check the first comment for the answer.
Professional Practice Pop Quiz: PICC Lines

Here's a quick question that comes up from time to time:
You've probably encountered PICC lines in practice, but do you know how they're classified under the Prescribed Procedures Regulation?
When an RT inserts a PICC line, is it considered a basic or advanced prescribed procedure below the dermis?

🗳️ Cast your vote before reading the answer!

🔘 Basic prescribed procedure
🔘 Advanced prescribed procedure

⬇️

✅ Answer: Basic prescribed procedure

A PICC line involves the insertion of a cannula without a balloon, which is considered a basic prescribed procedure below the dermis.

If the cannula has a balloon, the procedure is considered advanced, and the organization must have a CRTO-approved certification package before an RT can perform it.

No matter how a procedure is classified, RTs must always have the knowledge, skill, and judgment to perform it safely, competently, and ethically.

How confident were you in your answer? We'd love to know whether this was a refresher or something new. Share your thoughts below! 👇

Think about the moments that have shaped you as an RT.

The patient you'll never forget. The tough call you had to make. The colleague who taught you something that still influences your practice today.

Those experiences stay with us. They also give us a perspective that's worth sharing.

That's why the CRTO Council matters. It brings together Respiratory Therapists from across the province to talk about the issues facing the profession and help shape the decisions that affect all of us.

Right now, there are open seats in Districts 3, 4, and 6.

If you've ever found yourself thinking, "Someone should say something about that," or "There has to be a better way," this is a chance to be part of those conversations.

You don't need governance experience. You don't need to be in a leadership role. You just need to care about the profession and be willing to bring your perspective to the table.

And if serving on Council isn't for you, think about someone you respect. Someone whose voice others listen to. Someone who cares deeply about patients, practice, and the future of respiratory therapy. Consider nominating them.

Nominations close August 26.

Can an NP delegate the application of a form of energy to an RT?
Questions about delegation come up often in practice, and the answer may surprise you.

Yes. A Nurse Practitioner can delegate the application of a form of energy to a #RespiratoryTherapist, provided the RT has the knowledge, skill, and judgment to perform the procedure safely and competently.

However, there’s an important distinction: a Nurse Practitioner cannot delegate the ordering of an application of a form of energy to an RT.

Understanding the difference between ordering and applying controlled acts is essential to practising safely, ethically, and within your professional responsibilities. Staying informed about delegation requirements helps protect both your patients and your practice.

Updated Supervision Policy now available! Get up to speed on clearer supervision expectations, shared accountability, and what the changes mean for your practice. See what's changed: www.crto.on.ca/public/resou...
Supervision matters. Clarity makes a difference.

Whether you're supervising a colleague or practising under supervision, understanding your role is essential to safe, effective respiratory therapy practice.

CRTO Council has approved updates to the Supervision Policy that provide clearer guidance on expectations, responsibilities, and accountability. As supervision requirements continue to expand, the revised policy helps Members better understand what supervision looks like in practice and what is expected of everyone involved.

Key updates include:
✔️ Clear definitions of direct and indirect supervision
✔️ Greater clarity around the roles of supervisors and supervisees
✔️ Stronger emphasis on shared accountability

For Members, this means greater confidence in applying supervision requirements, more consistent expectations across practice settings, and clearer support for meeting professional obligations.

Ultimately, the revisions help strengthen safe practice, support professional growth, and protect the patients and communities RTs serve every day.

📖 Read the revised policy and learn what it means for your practice. https://www.crto.on.ca/public/resources-and-links/policies/

Canadian Multiculturalism Day on June 27th celebrates the cultures & communities that shape Canada and strengthen healthcare. Cultural humility helps build trust, support understanding, and improve care. Find out how you can celebrate www.canada.ca/en/canadian-...
Canadian Multiculturalism Day celebrates the many cultures, languages, and communities that shape Canada and reminds us that diversity is a strength in healthcare.

In respiratory care, culture and language can shape how symptoms are described, what questions get asked, and whether care feels safe. When we practice cultural humility, staying curious, avoiding assumptions, and communicating with clarity, we support better experiences and safer outcomes.

At the CRTO, public protection includes supporting professional practice that is respectful, accountable, and responsive to the public we serve.

Today, we celebrate the diversity within Ontario’s respiratory therapy community and the learning it brings to our profession.
