It's quite striking (and bizarre) to think how far this kind of thinking is from the original dot.com boom days, when the idea was that cheap and pervasive technology would lift people out of poverty and empower people around the world to advocate for themselves. I guess the age of optimism is over.

I would consider the fact that anyone can become a New Yorker perhaps the defining characteristic of New Yorker-ness. I can't find the statistic of how many New Yorkers were born outside the city, but given that about 1 in 4 of us are immigrants I wouldn't be surprised if it's 50%.
