I am reminded of this article I found in the The Derby Mercury, published 29 Aug 1734, about an inheritance dispute after someone "changed her sex":
The following being a very extraordinary Occurrence, please to take it in the Words of our Correspondent at Paris. "The Daughter of a famous Attorney of this City (Paris) who was christened as such, and whose Sex was never questioned to the Age of Sixteen, has since changed her Sex; and having thereupon made Application to the Parliament to be confirm'd in the Priveleges of Manhood. The Courts, after due Examination, issued last Week their Arret, that the Person heretofore a Girl, shall be henceforward deem'd a Man; that the Baptisimal Name shall be chang'd at the Font to one proper to Men; and that she shall take Place in the Inheritance of her Father's Estates accordingly. But to this last Article of the Sentence her Younger Brother has entered an Appeal, alledging, that he is still the Elder Son.

Reposting with alt text. Didn't realize Stephen King was also a piece of shit, but I guess we learn something new every day.
Two posts from Stephen King about Platner, in response to rape allegations against Platner: "Tell you what--if you knew the whole truth about everyone in the Senate and House of Reps, those chambers would be dead empty. Jesus said Let him who is without sin cast the first stone."

2nd post: "Graham Platner may drop out. (I hope he doesn't, but.) Meanwhile, the Abuser in Chief just keeps on keepin' on."

He's just a little guy! Running around on the slime mold I was trying to photograph!
A juvenile globular springtaail. Appearance is very tiny and pleasingly round, with a translucent amethyst-purple abdomen, yellow head and legs, purple antennae, and burgundy eye-spots.

You've reminded me of this piece I did years ago:
A drawing of a snowy hillside studded with green conifers. A green slug is riding a sled down the hill, grinning widely, with an orange scarf around its neck. A black-shelled snail whizzes past in front of it, steering with a pair of ski poles. It is also grinning.

The details of his dad's crime are disturbing - the man had no insurance because a prior DUI made it "too expensive". He had "2 or 3" 6-packs to drink that night, and said he'd gotten drunk because he had a fight with his wife... about his drinking. Lots of "poor me" attitude in the interview.
Mike Bovino has some advice for New Year's Eve partygoers - if you drink, don't drive. You could kill someone, as he did. Bovino, 37, is serving an 18-month prison sentence in the N.C. prison unit in Huntersville killing a woman with his car last June near Blowing Rock.

Bovino was drunk. "I wouldn't wish what has happened to me on anybody,' a conscience-stricken Bovino said Wednesday. "Getting dead drunk just isn't worth it." The woman he killed, Jane Mitchell, 24, never knew what hit her. It was just after midnight last June 5 when Bovino started driving home from a friend's home, where he had been drinking beer since 7 p.m.. "I had two, maybe three six-packs of beer. I don't remember how many. I turned onto the highway and just drove down the wrong side," he said. "I saw the lights from another car, but I thought they were in the other lane. Then, it was over so fast." Bovino's 1978 Dodge four drive pickup hit Mitchell's Datsun sedan headon about a mile north of Blowing Rock on U.S. 321.

Mitchell, who had gone on a drive with her husband to get doughnuts, was killed instantly. Her husband was seriously injured. Bovino was thrown into the middle of the highway but received, he says, "only a few bumps and bruises." "I didn't think I was drunk, but I blew .18 (on a Breathalyzer test)," Bovino said, struggling awkwardly with his handcuffs to smoke a Marlboro cigarette. Under N.C. law, a .10 blood alcohol content reading is considered conclusive evidence of incapacitation.

Bovino, who owned the Library Club bar in Blowing Rock, pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge of death by auto and DUI rather than be tried for felony manslaughter.

The intense, articulate Pennsylvania native insists he isn't a crusader. "Naw, I'm not that type," he said.

"But I've had a lot of time to think since I've been in here and it got to working on me that no one's doing anything about liquor and the men here say it's the cause of 80% of them being in here with me."

He doesn't intend to drink any alcohol when he gets out of prison, Bovino said. "I've got a dead woman on my conscience," he said. "I'm not against drinking, but I think people ought to know what it can do."
Bovino, who has three years of college, advises partygoers: "Someone's got to stay sober. Maybe you take turns and next time it'll be your turn not to drink and take care of everyone else. I know it's a cliche, but don't let your friends drive drunk."

He worries about what will happen to him and his family: wife, Betty, and three children, all under 12. His wife has a part-time job and they are receiving help from relatives.
"This has cost me just about everything. My reputation, my standing in the community," Bo-vino said. "It's been very costly in terms of money. I'd say it has cost me $40,000 to $50,000 alto-gether."
The money has gone for legal fees and lost income, he said, plus the loss of his $10,000 truck. He had no collision insurance, he said, because a 1974 DUI conviction in Boone drove his insurance costs too high. He paid a $500 fine and lost his license for a year as a result of that conviction, but wasn't re-quired to sign up for alcoholic re-habilitation. "It just didn't seem to be that serious an offense," Bovino said. "It was costly in lawyer's fees and fines, but I didn't even have to take a driving course like they do now. I didn't think I had a prob-lem. I thought I knew all there was to know about alcohol since it was my business."

Bovino began serving his sentence Dec. 11 and will be eligible for parole in April. He believes he would like to open a wine and cheese shop.
"Any kind of problems I've had have been around alcohol. I used alcohol to handle any kind of disturbance I had," he recalled. "This particular evening of the accident I had an argument with my wife, so I proceeded to get inebriated."
What was the argument about? "Drinking. My wife wanted me to get off the sauce."

Genus Ferissia, idk the species. They're called "freshwater limpets" but they're actually ramshorn snails in disguise, since they're in Planorbidae. I find them clinging to fallen leaves in a local creek.

And, of course, it can produce distressing quantities of slime bubbles which pour out from under its butt shell. I found this one when I was digging around in the dirt at my local cemetery, for reasons.

Not quite a "snail", but what is a snail besides a slug with a shell? Meet Testacella maugei, which looks like a fat slug with a clam shell glued to its butt.

Scales, courtesy of an unusually cooperative (and cold) western fence lizard. Traded the heat of my hand in exchange for some photos - I think we we were both pleased with the deal.

In the central area of many of the scales is a patch of vivid blue or teal coloration.Closeup of the scales on a western fence lizard's belly. Higgins and his ilk see this as an opportunity to try some eugenics. He's the guy who voted for David Duke for Governor, after all...
Nazi image 'a real problem' But Louisianians who voted for Mr. Duke for governor say it will be a lot easier to cast ballots for Mr. Buchanan for president. "Duke won't get the vote; Pat will. Pat represents much of the same positions," said Clay Higgins, 30, an Army military policy officer attending a Buchanan rally in Baton Rouge last week.

"Regardless of the fact that David's a homeboy and all that, the boy's a Nazi, and that's a real problem," said Mr. Higgins, who nevertheless voted for Mr. Duke in the governor's race..

He invited a neo-nazi on his show to spout antisemitic stuff, but that's nothing new - Carlson has always been pretty openly pro-Nazi. I think what most of the fuss is REALLY about is this bit of the interview.... you can see how it might upset a few of his regular audience:
Clip from Mother Jones article, which reads as follows:

But perhaps the most widely shared moments of the discussion had to do with Carlson and Fuentes’ shared distaste for Christian Zionism, the popular evangelical movement that calls Christians to support Israel. The conversation began with Carlson and Fuentes musing about the origins of the neoconservative movement—populated by such notables as William Kristol and Irving Podhoretz—that they blame for interventionist US foreign policy.

“It arises from Jewish leftists who were mugged by reality when they saw the surprise attack in the [1973] Yom Kippur war,” suggested Fuentes. This explanation didn’t satsify Carlson who countered, “But then how do you explain [US Israel ambassador] Mike Huckabee, [Texas senator] Ted Cruz, and [former national security adviser] John Bolton?” Carlson then went on to include, “George W. Bush, Karl Rove— all people I know personally who I’ve seen be seized by this brain virus. And they’re not Jewish. Most of them are self-described Christians.” He continued, “And then the Christian Zionists who are, well, Christian Zionists. What is that? I can just say for myself, I dislike them more than anybody, because it’s Christian heresy. And I’m offended by that as a Christian.”

We'd be better off as a society if raccoons were eligible for public office. I'm not sure my yard-raccoon has the experience to be a senator, but she's a hardworking single mom of 5, and I'd probably support her in a bid for mayor at the very least.

If you're a Californian, please consider picking a favorite Democratic candidate for Governor and helping campaign for them. Because this is one of the guys running on the republican side.
