Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 04/02/2025Skippy does the same thing!! I’ve no idea why exactly he does it either, but my guess is it’s related to being horny in some way since usually I see them do it in between bouts of feeding their mate and a lot of the time it’s followed by them getting it on for real in the end. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Oh yeah also almost forgot to tag it for #pigeonsky Have some happy rescue news to brighten your morning as it did mine after so many recent birds I couldn’t manage to save too! 🥹 070
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 02/02/2025They’re all super adorable - which makes it all the more sad to know that this little one’s suffering was entirely preventable to begin with. It’s neither sick nor injured, it just couldn’t find enough food in the city and almost starved to death because of it. 😔 030
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Normally a pigeon this age should be weighing at least 250-300gr, “5 weeks of age and 250gr of weight” are the recommendations for PMV vaccination for example, a healthy pigeon manages that easily. So this one we weren’t even sure if it’d survive the night tbh. 🥲 100
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 02/02/2025It’s still got a long way to go now of course, and I’ll need to check for any underlying diseases that might endanger its recovery now that it’s so weak already too, but considering it was a meagre 190gr of weight yesterday, this is a huuuge step forward already. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Yeah I reckon it’s maybe 6-8 weeks old at most? Didn’t even notice me approaching it until I actually touched it, and even then it hardly resisted being picked up. It was really cold already too then, I’m pretty sure it had just huddled up by the stairs to literally die. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 02/02/2025Before and after - picked up this little guy from the gutter yesterday evening where it had huddled up, already ready to accept its fate. Completely emaciated. It received immediate care in the form of subcut fluids, baby formula and all the warmth - totally different bird already this morning! 3331
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 29/01/2025Thanks, from what I understand about the colour genetics that does sound pretty plausible. I figured ash red and bar were the base, but I’m not particularly great at identifying all the many modifiers that exist yet. Super interesting stuff though! 220
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 29/01/2025Dang that really is one heck of an orange pigeon! I’m not the most knowledgable about pigeon genetics, maybe @graemeboyd.bsky.social can enlighten us with some details about this bird? Definitely within the range of the possible for fancy pigeons though. 210
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 29/01/2025Define orange, you mean like neon orange? Or more like a faded reddish brown that looks kinda orange? The former could be spray paint, often used for racing pigeons but pigeons do also come in a variety of bred colours in the red and brown spectrum 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 29/01/2025Skippy has such a little babyface, despite being almost 10 months old now, his cere is still rather soft and pink. He also still has a soft reddish patch on his chest, which usually fades before adulthood. 🤔 (Pic: The Skibbles chilling on my desk after an evening bath) #pigeonsky 81329
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 24/01/2025Still feeling art-blocked to hell and back even after what’s been five years now, so I’m doodling pigeon face studies in crappy ballpoint ink pen so I don’t forget how to even hold a pen at this point. 🫠 2282
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 24/01/2025Good morning to the ornery little gargoyle above my bed, please stop biting me. 0383
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 29/11/2024World’s most spoiled little b—, refuses to eat anything other than peeled sunflower seeds apparently. (Eye got worse so now we’re on antibiotic eye drops on top of oral antibiotics, it’s not the eye seen in the video tho) 3283
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 26/11/2024So far so good, the eye looks terrible but from what we can tell right now it seems like there isn’t any more serious damage actually, just lots of blood and swelling. As for that whole other thing… one thing at a time, it’s an old wound so there’s only so much we could do either way. 040
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Ngl I don’t have high hopes that the eye can even be saved or that this pigeon wouldn’t be better off euthanised in general, but for now it’s getting all the painkillers and antibiotics and care I can give it, and we’re seeing the vet in a few hours. 170
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 26/11/2024Why do I keep finding the absolute weirdest freak accident pigeons?! What even hurt this poor bird to leave a lump and cavity the size of my thumb?! And how did it survive to heal only to end up huddled up against the wall with nasty head trauma anyway?! 1160
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Our rescue as a whole also benefits though as the owner of the building is making quite a decent sized donation to our cause - which, you know, means a lot because without money we can’t help any birds either. Also we can now educate people on the reality of cleaning dirty attics from pigeon poop. 010
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Look, when she was found she was a lil squab caked in poop. No way to tell except for DNA testing… so we just make a lucky guess based on behaviour and it turns out Joachim was a bit of an unusually rowdy girl. But then suddenly there was a surprise egg. 010
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Although that said I did get a pretty neat free cage out of it all. Was on one of the attic we checked/cleaned and since it was to be thrown away anyway… YOINK, mine now. 👀 160
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Man this week has been insane. 36 hours of all pigeon related work in just three days. And that not even counting transit times or regular care for the pigeons I have at home. 🫠 160
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 21/11/2024Haino Update: Still RoundTM (off Screen) And his wifey (blue and white bands) Joachim has graced us with her presence again 1432
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 20/11/2024We’re doing our best! Which just makes it all the more infuriating really when things like this happen that were just entirely preventable. Maybe we shoulda just ripped one of those old ass windows out of the wall entirely last week so nobody could even think to close it… 😅 020
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 20/11/2024It’s so sad, this was 100% entirely preventable and would’ve saved us four whole hours of work too if only people had done the lazy thing of not effing touching anything they were explicitly notified to leave alone to begin with. 020
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Mind you the owner and his associates have been nothing but friendly and were so happy they found us and we agreed to help move these animals the gentlest way possible. We don’t know who did it, but our guess is most likely one of the residents of the building. Gods I’m so tired now. 170
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 19/11/2024We went there to check the situation one week ago precisely and our instructions were in no way unclear: leave the windows open for now, we will deal with the pigeons when we come back. Closing the windows would mean their death. Today we came back to find someone had done just that though. 🫠 160
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Today was probably one of the hardest days in my whole time rescuing pigeons. 18 pigeons locked up in an attic, two already dead when we arrived, six on the verge of dying. Three of those also died in our hands, despite the fact we immediately gave them infusions and all the warmth we could find. 3120
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 19/11/2024We literally did nickname him “Final Bossfight” because he’s super defensive and slaps HARD. 030
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 19/11/2024They absolutely are! I love how much variety there is even in the feral flocks we care for, and it’s so fun to just watch them go about their pigeon business once you’ve actually earned their trust. Working with pigeons sure never gets boring. 000
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Iris isn’t super thrilled about me getting too close either most of the time. Sometimes he’s okay with sitting on my hand at least tho. The secret to taking pictures like this… is having a good camera with decent zoom. Most of the pretty pics were taken with my Nikon rather than my phone. 010
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 18/11/2024That is so damn relatable lmao. I’m just trying to focus on posting here more while sticking to just reading on the other site. Kinda wanna ditch the other one entirely tbh but there’s still people posting there that aren’t here yet… more or less. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 18/11/2024I‘m glad to hear that! It’s so easy to believe the bad rep they get though, it’s so casually woven into everything, even our very language! One’s a pigeon and the other a dove, when in reality they’re the same species even. Lotsa good people working on making the world a better place for them tho! 010
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 18/11/2024They so are! They’re so full of personality and can be such big old dummies sometimes, in all the best and most adorable ways really. 120
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 18/11/2024If you see this, post your bird #art! I have many kinds of bird arts, yes. 👀 (But mostly I just have lots of birds nowadays) 0237
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 18/11/2024It is an excellent shape for a pigeon, yes. He’s my perfect son. Unlike his wife, she’s the disappointment of a son. Always was. She was found covered in so much crusty old poo and it never got better from there. Still love her too though, I love all my pidge children. 020
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024Good news for you, I regularly visit some superbly angy forbidden squish orbs. This one beats me up good every time I come to check for eggs. 🥲 Such violence. I love them too. Pigeons are just magnificent really. 030
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024Yeah especially with domestic pigeons, literally the only „instinct“ we’ve left them with is the one that makes them seek out the giant weird featherless apes that bred them this way. Everything else they gotta learn the hard way really. 020
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024Oh yeah he BIG MAD but he also knows me and I gave him some bed‘n‘breakfast seebs for being such a good egg daddy again as always. Somewhere deep down I know he still loves me too. 010
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024We always try to explain it to people that teaching their pigeons to have positive associations with humans can lead to them innocently landing in the hands of an animal abuser and coming back to us all broken if not just outright dead and that seems to help somewhat. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024Lots of people sadly don’t understand that them being super friendly to the animal is not as helpful as it feels in the moment. I get that they want the animal to feel as loved as the deserve to be, but especially with wild animals or ferals to be released again it can often be a death sentence. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024I’ve definitely had pigeons who were more friendly right from the start too, while others just absolutely hated my guts and fought me all the way. Though being a bit friendlier usually isn’t too much of a problem as other pigeons will teach them to be wary enough usually 010
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024That said… yeah I regularly see other people from our group struggle with imprinting too. They love their patients and dote on them and then it’s no wonder if they become very friendly after just a few days. Especially hurts when people do it with wild species like wood pigeons though. 140
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024Thing is; I don’t cuddle them. As mean as it might seem, I simply grab them whether they like it or not, feed them and then put them back in their box/cage/aviary and then they don’t see much of me for a couple hours until it’s feeding time again. I only cuddle those that are clearly non-releasable 130
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024It differs from person to person. For me personally? Adults that needed tube feeding not once, squabs that had to be hand raised… I’ve had one imprint on me and another one sort of did but I’ve let that happen as skippy is non-releasable due to PMV lasting damage anyway. 110
Crowfangs @crowfangs.bsky.social · 15/11/2024The recovery rates for pigeon pox are generally a lot better than PMV though aren’t they? Cause man, what we lack in pox we got in PMV it feels, even had a tiny yellow nugget of a chick with the frickin virus once, that was absolutely heartbreaking. 010
