this episode in particular made my skin crawl, tho happy she left ofc
"My rationalist ex (Ronny Fernandez) once told a friend of ours that the meaning of her marriage was 'Holly can't leave me' and the meaning of [points to other friends]'s marriage was 'Holly can't leave me' and the point of marriage itself was 'Holly can't leave me'.

Well I could and I did."

It kind of reminds me of this story by Daniel Ellsberg www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2... except he is, like, deliberately dedicated to moronmaxxing in a self-reinforcing process that continuously generates new bogus esoteric knowledge

Yudkowsky specifically doesn't think superintelligent AI would have any form of consciousness/sentience, though (pic is from the online supplement to their recent book)

In fact Parfit was part of his committee for this dissertation
I am also grateful to my excellent committee. I’m especially indebted to Ruth Chang, who helped
me decide to write a dissertation in ethics. Derek Par t and Je McMahan gave me very helpful
feedback and brought some important considerations to my attention which would have been missed

Doomers (or at least Yudkowsky/Soares) think superintelligent AI will probably not be sentient (below is from the online supplement to their recent book)

Yeah this is a point I keep harping on - Yudkowsky/Soares in fact specifically think the superintelligent genocidal AI would probably *not* be conscious at all

re: sentience, I don't know about Jacob Coxon but the og lesswrong "doomers", Yudkowsky/Soares, specifically say that the superintelligent AI they're worried about would probably *not* be sentient at all from the online supplement to their recent book:

My fave fun fact (that people/articles get wrong a lot): Yudkowsky/Soares/etc think the godlike superintelligent AI they expect to kill off humanity will probably *not* be sentient

"Stalin is too rude" - Lenin
Postscript: Stalin is too rude, and this fault, entirely supportable in relations among us communists, becomes unsupportable in the office of General Secretary. Therefore, I propose to the comrades to find a way to remove Stalin from that position and appoint to it another man who in all respects differs from Stalin only in superiority – namely, more patient, more loyal, more polite and more attentive to comrades, less capricious, etc. This circumstance may seem an insignificant trifle, but 1 think that from the point of view of preventing a split and from the point of view of the relation between Stalin and Trotsky which I discussed above, it is not a trifle, or it is such a trifle as may acquire a decisive significance.

in the episode you seem to conflate x-risk/doomerism with AI sentience but some prominent doomers, e.g., Yudkowsky+Soares think a superintelligent AI would probably not be sentient though? e.g., Y+S in the online supplement to their recent book: "anticipate AIs that lack any form of sentience ..."
"The tragic and likely future isn't one where our successors simply have different tastes or values than us. The problem is not that our mechanical children will listen to music that is too fast and loud for our taste. No, we anticipate AIs that lack any form of sentience; that they'll be mighty but hollow systems that transform everything they touch into a lifeless wasteland, eventually consuming themselves to add one last point to their tally. They would leave behind a dead world with no one left to appreciate it."

Chapman gives an account of his part of this in the 1980s on this page -> metarationality.com/ken-wilber-b... , weirdly embedded in a review of a novel by Ken Wilber
(screenshot from David Chapman's web page)

This was a jarring result. Rational action requires a solution to the frame problem; but rationality (a mathematical proof) appeared to show that no solution was possible.9

Orange had turned against itself, and cut off the tree-limb it was standing on. Still, as we hurtled to the ground, we figured that we’d somehow find a way out. There had to be a solution, because of course we do all act rationally.

At this point, Phil Agre came back from a gig in California with a shocking announcement:

Dreyfus was right.

What?? Had Phil gone over to the Dark Side?

But with the announcement, he brought the secret key: a pre-publication draft of Dreyfus’ next book, Being-in-the-World, which for the first time made Heidegger’s magnum opus, Being and Time, comprehensible.

Being and Time demolishes the whole orange framework. Human being is not a matter of calculation. People are not isolated individuals, living in a world of dead material objects, strategizing to manipulate them to achieve utilitarian goals. We are always already embedded in a web of connections with living nature and with other

Like the "oh-so-very utilitarian" bit here,p less an argument or construction and more a gesture towards a vibe about utilitarianism Also notice here the actual point of the post - it's really about the *unfairness* of the basilisk (really really about the unfairness the world to him personally)

I though the Greek connection was regarded as dubious, and must have gotten that idea from here -> en.wikisource.org/wiki/An_Etym... . I promise I didn't get it from an LLM :) But since this is from 1891, maybe research advances have solidified the connection now?

They seem to use their decision theory stuff* as a way to recreate something like Kantian deontology within a utilitarian/econbrain framework? *(I do not understand their decision theory stuff at all, but this is how I've observed it seems to get used at least rhetorically)
