Hoodoo Almanac @hoodooalmanac.bsky.social · 19/06/2025
You can read all about the abolitionists who helped secure freedom for the enslaved in the Hoodoo Almanac 2025. Frederick Douglass (p.113), Harriet Tubman (p 166), and Sojourner Truth (p 362) all played significant roles in the pursuit of freedom for all. #Juneteenth #HoodooAlmanac #hoodoohistory
A vintage woodcut-style poster featuring Harriet Tubman in the center with her fist raised, flanked by Frederick Douglass on the left and Sojourner Truth on the right. Below them, bold text reads: “JUNETEENTH.” A caption underneath states: “On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.” The bottom of the image reads: “Hoodoo Almanac 2025.” The ornate border includes flourishes, a crescent moon, botanical elements, and a small conjure bottle. The entire design is rendered in sepia tones on aged parchment.

A pink-toned infographic titled "Protest Remedies and Survival Guide: Brought to You by the Hoodoo Almanac – Pepper Spray Exposure." It provides five steps for treating exposure to pepper spray: 1) Rinse eyes and face with cool water or sterile saline. 2) Do not rub affected areas. 3) Use baby shampoo or diluted dish soap to remove oils from the skin. 4) A 50/50 mixture of milk of magnesia and water may help neutralize burning but should only be used in emergencies and never repeatedly in the eyes. 5) Remove contaminated clothing and rinse skin thoroughly. Hoodoo Almanac's Protest Remedies and Survival Guide #2: Tear Gas Exposure. Be informed. Stay safe. #hoodooalmanac
A green-toned infographic titled "Protest Remedies and Survival Guide: Brought to You by the Hoodoo Almanac – Tear Gas Exposure." It outlines six steps for dealing with tear gas: 1) Leave the area and get fresh air. 2) Flush eyes with saline or water repeatedly. 3) Rinse face and skin with a 50/50 solution of baking soda and water. 4) Use a vinegar- or lemon juice-soaked bandana as a mask to reduce tear gas effects (not for eyes). 5) If a tear gas canister lands nearby, cover it with something like a traffic cone, then pour water into the cone to suppress the gas. 6) Bring a leaf blower to disperse gas away from crowds if expecting heavy exposure. The photograph is part of the "Collection Monsieur Van de Meerssche: Congo Belge, [1950-1960]" and was taken during Belgium's colonial rule in the Congo. The image depicts a black child in a cage, observed by two white children, reflecting the deep-seated racial prejudices of that era. #crossroadsu
A historical photograph, digitally colorized, depicting a young Black child sitting inside a birdcage while two white children sit outside, smiling and interacting with the cage. The setting is an outdoor area with laundry hanging in the background. The image evokes strong themes of racism, dehumanization, and historical oppression.

The Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was under Belgian rule from 1908 to 1960. During this period, indigenous populations were often subjected to inhumane treatment, and such images serve as a stark reminder of the colonial atrocities committed.

This photograph has been documented in the archives of Cegesoma, the Centre for Historical Research and Documentation on War and Contemporary Society.
