But in a couple of months, with a national crisis and a new Prime Minister, the pendulum has swung and the polls now are predicting a Liberal win. I am not sure if that will come true but the fact we are even here is unlike anything I have ever seen. /18

Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
But - despite riding high for years in the polls - the world shifted. The new PM called an election. This is what the Conservatives had wanted for the better part of TWO YEARS. In January, polls had them winning by an absolutely crushing majority. /17

Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
Remember "Axe the tax"?Carney also immediately did away with the carbon tax. So the Conservatives lost their favourite punching bag in Justin Trudeau AND the policy they most hated in the carbon tax. They essentially got what they wanted. /16

Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
In the past few months, the President of the US has decided he has issues with Canada and is going to try to annex it with economic force. So it is a real crisis for us. /15

Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
The Liberal Party runs a faster-than-normal process and chooses a new leader: Mark Carney, our current Prime Minister. This guy is a bit of an all-star candidate in that he was the head of the Bank of Canada and then the Bank of England. The hope is that he would be good in a crisis. /14
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
The leader of that party becomes Prime Minister. So technically a party could change leaders multiple times in a 4 year period before the next election and there would be multiple Prime Ministers. Anyway, Trudeau says he is leaving as soon as party runs a process to choose a replacement. /13
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
Sidebar here - and this will be crazy to our American neighbours - but the Prime Minister is just the leader of the ruling party. It is the party who chooses who will lead them and not the voters. The voters just vote for representatives and the party with the most gets to form government and /12

With so many of his own Ministers no longer supporting him and with public opinion in the toilet, Trudeau announced he was resigning as soon as the Liberal Party chose a new leader. /11
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
This was in the wake of the election of Donald Trump in the US. He had a known dislike for Trudeau and started talking smack about Canada. Canadians did not like this. /10
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
But Justin Trudeau, who lost a bunch of people who saw the polls and suddenly wanted to spend more time with their family, finally angered a core ally: his own Finance Minister. There is a story there but for simplicity's sake let's just say this was the straw that broke the camel's back. /9
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
The problem was that the other parties - who were left leaning - did not! They refused to bring the government down, despite it being a minority. That means we were heading to a 4 year term and an election in October of this year. /8
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
But with a large swath of Canadians now hating Justin Trudeau (who - like him or hate him - you have to admit is a big personality that you could potentially get tired of in ten years), the attack tactics were paying dividends for the Conservatives and they really, really, really wanted an election.
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
This guy - Pierre Poilievre - used to work in the last Conservative government where he was often tasked with attacking opposition parties, the media, and so on. He continues that approach to this day but now as the leader of the party.

Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
The Conservatives started flying high in the polls on the back of their leader, who you may have seen Joe Rogan talk about when he ate an apple. Essentially, he wanted to move the Conservatives towards populism and embraced a lot of political attacks and slogans - his fave being "Axe the tax" /7
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
The carbon tax plus fatigue with Justin Trudeau specifically led to Liberals plummeting in the polls. This is important because in the last election, they got a minority government which means they need to work with other parties. If they can't, an election is triggered. /6
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
In their shift left, the cornerstone Liberal issue was the fight against climate change, which notably took the form of a tax on carbon. This is complicated enough to warrant its own thread but that complexity - and the word "tax" - made it very unpopular. /5
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
Under Trudeau, they mostly went left. Now, ten years and multiple elections later, people are tired of them. There is an appetite for change. Despite having multiple parties, normally only the Liberals or Conservatives hold power. For the better part of two years, the latter have polled very well.
100
Crofton Steers @crofton.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
With Canada having multiple parties, the Liberals tend to be "in the middle" on a lot of things. This means that they tend to shift left or right depending on the issues of the moment and who is leading them. /3
