A pic of our boy Chip for #caturday. Chip likes playing hockey with our basement door as the goal, so the first pic is of Chip with his paw under the basement door and the second pic is of our basement stairwell and the collection of items Chip knocked down there last night.

Here's our boy Chip hanging out in a cat carrier we left out. He went to the vet for his annual checkup earlier this week and fought being put in the carrier then, but after he got home he decided he liked the carrier and has been hanging out there some of each day. #caturday #CatsOfMastodon #cats

A slightly early in US Eastern time #caturday meme. It's a perfect description of our cat Rose, who attempted to eat various pieces of plastic today because they were new and they were reachable. She definitely has pica - she often eats random stuff off the […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Ordered these lanyards from the Human Rights Campaign on Friday and they arrived Saturday afternoon. Very impressive. More importantly, I'm happy to be able to wear symbols of our shared values. The Welcoming Schools lanyard is potentially for my daughter […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
Two lanyards side by side, one of which is made of squares of color representing the colors of the LGBT+ pride flag and the equals/equality symbol and the other of which has large text spelling out "Welcoming Schools" along with some colored stripes.

Chip is enjoying a view of the entire basement from his perch. I dedicated this spot to our cats many years ago and it's a perpetual favorite of theirs. #cats #CatsOfMastodon #caturday
Chip, our black and white tabby, lays in a shallow (8 cm high) cardboard box on the top shelf of a set of black steel wire shelves, looking at the camera. The ceiling and walls meet above his head in this corner spot.

Our boy Chip says hello and happy Caturday. My wife thinks he was a hockey player in a former life and the second pic is our pantry closet this morning with three fishies in it. We get these fishies out of his "practice goal" of the moment a couple times a […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Happy #caturday! Our daughter's dog Piper decided to take over Chip's favorite spot. While Chip loves to be a bully, he's a little afraid of Piper, so he ended up on a condo platform. I learned that Piper's color is called "fawn" while writing the alt-text […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

John Kenneth Galbraith's observation about conservatism is as relevant as ever. "The modern conservative is not even especially modern. He is engaged, on the contrary, in one of man’s oldest, best financed, most applauded, and, on the whole, least successful […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
The modern conservative is not even especially modern. He is engaged, on the contrary, in one of man’s oldest, best financed, most applauded, and, on the whole, least successful exercises in moral philosophy. That is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness. It is an exercise which always involves a certain number of internal contradictions and even a few absurdities. The conspicuously wealthy turn up urging the character-building value of privation for the poor. The man who has struck it rich in minerals, oil, or other bounties of nature is found explaining the debilitating effect of unearned income from the state. The corporate executive who is a superlative success as an organization man weighs in on the evils of bureaucracy. Federal aid to education is feared by those who live in suburbs that could easily forgo this danger, and by people whose children are in public schools. Socialized medicine is condemned by men emerging from Walter Reed Hospital. Social Security is viewed with alarm by those who have the comfortable cushion of an inherited income. Those who are immediately threatened by public efforts to meet their needs — whether widows, small farmers, hospitalized veterans, or the unemployed — are almost always oblivious to the danger.
