Today we commemorate the victims of the Strage di Bologna, a grotesque act of neofascist violence committed against the citizens of Bologna on this date in 1980.
Photo of Stazione di Bologna Centrale shortly after the bombing.Today we commemorate the victims of the Strage di Bologna, a grotesque act of neofascist violence committed against the citizens of Bologna on this date in 1980. The 85 dead and 216 wounded were not the only victims of fascist violence in these years, however. The Strage di Bologna was the largest in a series of neofascist campaigns of the "strategy of tension," starting from the Strage di Piazza Fontana in 1969.

We at the Critical Theory Working Group wish to express our solidarity with all those who have been harmed or killed by fascist violence, both in Bologna and elsewhere. Moreover, we recognize that our intellectual task is to create a world which overcomes the barbarism of the past and present. To philosophize from the standpoint of redemption, as Adorno reminds us, is to forge perspectives "that displace and estrange the world, reveal it to be, with its rifts and crevices, as indignant and distorted as it will appear one day in the messianic light." This intellectual task, at once seemingly easy and impossible, is not merely aimed at interpreting the world, but of changing it. Our solemn commemoration of the victims of the Strage di Bologna commits us to opposing fascist violence wherever it crops up. Bettering the world is the crux of critical theory, as Horkheimer claims that "even in the face of pessimistic assessments, critical theory is guided by the unswerving interest in a better future."
