Closing an SYEP site after a traumatic act of violence is the wrong response. TRIGGER Project serves 150+ DC youth through the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP). Young people are calling on DOES to reverse its decision & keep the site open. Sign the petition: bit.ly/Protect-Trigger

The goal of this is to re-establish and strengthen the Black teenager 'direct to prison pipeline' that the District has worked so hard to disrupt. It's racist, cruel, and evil.

MPD does this every year and it’s literally a policy to surveil and police the Blackest parts of the city without concern for any constitutional protections.

Behind every campaign is the work you don’t always see. Our Research, Documentation, and Outreach working groups have been heads-down in finalizing surveys, mapping out outreach strategy, and pulling together photos that capture exactly what this campaign is about. Big things loading.

Last week, YOC sat down with the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to talk about what young people actually need: Resources, support, and pathways that keep them OUT of the system in the first place. Decisions about youth shouldn’t be made without youth at the table.

So how can you get involved? - Plan to attend the Council's second vote on 5/5 (we'll post details soon) - Make sure youth know about the curfew zones so they can make plans to stay safe (MPD posts them on their IG) 7/8

Council decided not to vote on an emergency extension of the curfew. Right now, the mayor has declared a state of emergency, so the curfew expansion is still being enforced. But the Council is still working out the details of what they want to put in place for the rest of the spring and summer. 5/8

Even though 8 Members voted to approve the permanent curfew expansion, the Council agreed overall that DC needs a real plan to meet youth needs. That includes making more safe spaces available for teens, finding alternatives to punishment-centered approaches, and investing in District youth. 4/8

DC Council voted to permanently expand the youth curfew, with a few changes. There's one more vote to pass it. If it passes, the changes won't apply immediately. The bill will go to the Mayor & then to Congress (because we're not a state #51). The second vote is currently scheduled for 5/5. 3/8

DC has had an earlier citywide curfew and even earlier curfew zones for anyone under 18 since July, 2025. Those laws expired because they were only temporary. Now the government is trying to decide what to do next. So what happened at Tuesday's Council Meeting? A few things... 2/8

Claim: Viral videos prove youth are up to no good whenever they gather in large groups. Fact check: Most young people are gathering to fill an unmet need of building community. The viral videos do not tell the whole story & are typically taken without context. 12/13

Claim: Hosting teen events is “soft on crime" and rewards "bad behavior." Fact check: Investing in young people is smart, not "soft," and provides sustainable and fun ways to keep youth safe. It's not a reward, it's prevention. 11/13

Claim: Enforcement will not harm youth because MPD will treat them with care & respect. Fact check: MPD, WMATA police, and the National Guard all patrol curfew zones, especially near public transportation sites, & witnesses have seen them harass and antagonize youth, some with pepper spray. 10/13

Curfews do not create safety. They criminalize young people, particularly Black youth, for simply existing in their community & city. Curfews push young people out of public spaces, increase unnecessary contact with the police, & ignore the real conditions that lead to harm in the first place. 3/8

Being outside shouldn’t be treated like a crime. Existing in your own city shouldn’t come with restrictions. Real safety doesn’t look like more curfews. It looks like investment, resources, and spaces where young people can actually thrive. 2/8

A fast-tracked youth curfew extension in DC is being pushed as protection, yet it risks doing what policies like this have always done: over-police, over-surveil, and criminalize Black & Latine youth. We reject harmful curfew extensions! 1/8
