In a couple hours I'm going to be back at the park, giving advice to hikers and explaining trees to kids. It does mean I'm missing the community potluck, but next week I'm missing the park for a different community meeting. Why's it always everything on Saturdays? ^-^
Redwoods reach for the sky across a meadow framed with mature live oak dwarfed by their size. Human for scale; a hiker follows a path across the far side of the meadow marked with split-rail fencing.

This is important. Making government work isn't a one-time thing, it's constant work that resists fascism. Vote blue, no matter who; fix 'em later - protest or primary - don't let something worse in the interim.

This is something I do just to feel good; but it kinda feels good to know others are also learning about it. For me, it's two-moves-one stone; out with people and protecting our forest. We also did this behind our neighborhood, before the fire. That's where they stopped it. youtu.be/8QzRKVDRRBw

New chore just dropped! Ominous noise from the kitchen outlet. Unplugging everything on the circuit didn't help. Tripping the ground fault didn't help. It's off at the breaker box but I promised to staff the visitor center today so it'll hafta hold.

Since Burning Man is happening, I wanted to revisit this. My spouse posted the longer video with her art over on YouTube. There's poetry, music and lights made from interference patterns and guitar pedals, and light sculptures. 2 bikes, 25'x25' camp, all fit on a Mazda 3. youtu.be/gd4XQkDAuXw

Ohh, spouse made me dulce de membrillo - quince paste or cheese - and oh it's quite nice. One of the oldest cooked fruits in the archeological record, quince predate even domestication of the apple. And to think, we were given a crate of it for free. This tastes like the fruit smells! Delicious.
A square of a deep red fruit jelly held up in a wax wrapper to the sky to contrast with the deep green of the redwood in the background. Colored holiday lights show the true color palette crossing from the awning just out of frame.

One thing I like about bsky is the feeds. Each one is different, a different pulse. There's a 'for you' by spacecowboy17 that's entirely 'like' based. I have recently trained it to show me furries vacation photos from liking fursuits in remote locations. Fun seeing fun!

Lunch break! I tried to hoof it to see the leopard lilies, but like the ones in my yard, they seem to be done for the season. But everything is so green!
Big Basin Visitors Center view South. Metal awnings frame the sky and vertical lines of vivid green and black redwoods recovering from fire. Sun shines in from the middle left from a deep blue sky down over a set of oaks still showing a few skeletal branches from their green crowns over a small glade with info plaque set around it. A moment of peace on a busy day in the park, the parking lots in the background lined with cars under the trees.More North Escape, a view up, up towards the sun, the narrow columns of green hide the black trunks but reveal the missing limbs as they stand over the junction of trails and road. The burnt-out concrete bridge is gone, with a temporary aluminum footpath over the creek. A fire-scarred sign warns of the previous bridge's truck load limits that are entirely optimistic for a footbridge.North Escape road winds through a forest missing branches and striped with shadow but the trees are all in varying states of damage but all are green and intent on filling back the canopy despite being half-stripped of branches by the fire six years ago. The California lilac fills in the gaps dominating the near field for the short time before the forest ceiling closes over once more.Opal Creek oxbow with North Escape leading South. The leopard lilies are done blooming but the green of ferns and lush plants hanging over the slow crawling creek as it winds its way through the redwoods is a bright emerald green in contrast to the dark forest green of the regrowing redwoods.

I made the official transgender icon for MSN Online in October, 1995. So if you've seen this hideous 16-color safe-mode ico file or something based on it, I'm sorry ^-^ commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tr...
Pink triangle with blue male, female, and combined transgender symbol overlaid in a two-color version of transgender symbol. In the 90s, Windows computers only saved 16 specific colors for icons, so the colors used had to fit in that set. It's eye-searing pink with a royal blue symbol.

One positive thing about unemployment is skilling up basics. Saturday breakfast: Homemade sandwich bread french toast with homemade elderberry syrup from wild-foraged berries. Most expensive part was the egg. This was one of the first things I learned to cook.
Breakfast on a plate, french toast golden brown with spices and egg batter, with broad pools of red tinged black elderberry syrup. A quarter is given for scale.
Recipe:
2-4 slices Sandwich bread (can be stale)
1 egg
Milk in equal parts to egg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cardamom (green)
1/4 tsp allspice
2 tsp ghee (oil or butter, for cooking)
Mix egg, milk, spices into an even slurry, pour onto a dish wide enough for the bread to lie flat.
Heat a griddle or frying pan to medium, smear half the butter across evenly (less if you can only fit some of your bread slices)
Dip the bread in to coat evenly, don't soak it (it will fall apart).
Lay the bread on the griddle, it should take about minute to cook; depending upon temperature.
Flip when back side is seared and golden to taste.
Repeat until egg mixture is exhausted, dribble remainder on top of wet side of toast before flipping.
Remember to wash surfaces touched by the raw egg mixture thoroughly.
Garnish with syrup, jam, or whatever you desire!

"In the void of imagination... may dreams be painted. May electronic voids be free for minds wandering alone, together by the network." All this talk about the Digital Circus ending with Jax reminds me of this poem I wrote back in 1994. Because I was suddenly free... Alone, but not alone.

Views from the park! After my shift at the visitors center Friday, I hiked the trail we just got back for the first time since the fire. I've hiked parts of it before the fire, but never the whole thing, even though it's just under five miles.
Sequoia South Trailhead, Big Basin State Park. Tall redwoods tower out of frame as the trail climbs their roots up towards the deep blue sky. Bottle-brush redwoods with their bushy appearance regrow in the background, regenerating the branches lost to the 2020 CZU Lightning Complex Fire five and an a half years prior. A sign marks the beginning of the trail.Rhododendron occidentale, formerly pentanthera, the redwood or western azalea flowers heavily with their lovely scent and soft blushed white blossoms around the wide stone staircase to the ruined footprint of the original visitors center. This is near the south end of the trail, showing that nature regrows, without our help rebuilding. We should follow its lead!Looking up into the sky inside a burnt 'fairy ring' or redwood cathedral. From this view, the towering trunks point inward as the afternoon sun cuts in from the side. Redwoods replace fallen trunks, creating ever growing rings of trees from fire, storm, and animal (human) damage. Several trunks here are completely charred and unable to regenerate, but the others all have tufts of deep green as they replace their lost branches.Sempervirens Falls, looking out at the falls. Before the fire this was a cloistered and dark falls in a sea of shadowed green, but how the sunlight breaks through and the viewpoint is from a pullout on a closed road leading to Sky Meadows, one of the two campgrounds under reconstruction.

A little seen corner of Big Basin, looking north, northwest into the park from Jamison Creek Road. So many trees killed by the 2020 CZU fire; we've never had weather like that in the written history. But lots of green filling in the gaps already!
A view NNW into Big Basin State Park from Jamison Creek. Stands of fire-killed doug firs silver the hillsides while chaparral manzanita, madrone, and further in the distance dark green redwoods dot the hills. Bare stone and sand are visible on sharp peaks of hills below.

This is a rule I follow. It's not that I'm not angry. I'm very angry. It's that there are people who have that as a job already. I support them, it's important work. But if I also do it, there's no escape from the angry. Everyone needs space from angry. It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Have you ever tried to wrap your head around neurodiversity or gender diversity, etc? It's like, everyone is on all these spectrums, just... some people stick out a little more in some direction or other. But that's normal. Atypical or rare can still be normal! Isn't that fun to think about?

Touching grass? The park was quite pleasant yesterday. I was there from open and closed the visitor center myself. Notable animals seen on the ground: Two young turkey-vultures and the local raven. Rarely get to see the former on the ground!
View out the Big Basin Visitor's Center at the butterfly meadow which protected the three oaks in view from the fire which had burned 97% of the park and every building. The meadow is green, surrounded by bushes and all the charred redwoods in the background are also green with recovery growth making the trees look like giant bottle brushes. A paved path, which survived the fire, and the new fences are weathered enough to make the fire damage almost forgettable. The sky is a deep blue between the tall trees.
