#Sfentyli is a submerged village in #Crete, #Greece, located within the #Aposelemis Dam's reservoir. When the #dam is full, the village disappears underwater, only reappearing during periods of low water levels. Its eerie, submerged remnants are a unique feature of the area #storytelling #landscape
Sfentyli is a small village in Crete, Greece, with a unique and fascinating story. Located in the Heraklion region, it lies within the boundaries of the Aposelemis Dam's reservoir. The village has been submerged under water multiple times due to the fluctuations in the water levels of the reservoir. This phenomenon occurs because the dam was constructed to providedrinking water. As the dam fills up, the water level rises, submerging the village and its surroundings, making it disappear from view. The village resurfaces when water levels drop, revealing the eerie remains of the once-thriving community.

Historically, Sfentyli was a small but vibrant village, with its own local traditions, architecture, and way of life. It was populated by farmers and shepherds who lived off the land and the resources provided by the natural environment. In the early 20th century, however, the construction of the Aposelemis Dam began, as part of a large-scale project to improve water supply for the surrounding areas. The project required the creation of a large reservoir, which would flood the valley and submerge several villages, including Sfentyli.

Before its eventual submergence, the villagers were relocated to nearby areas, and their homes were abandoned. Despite the dam’s purpose to provide benefits to the region, the loss of Sfentyli and other villages under the reservoir remains a poignant reminder of the impact such large infrastructure projects can have on local communities.

Today, the submerged village is a hauntingly beautiful site. When the water levels of the Aposelemis Dam recede—usually during dry periods or maintenance—remnants of the village become visible again. The foundations of houses, stone walls, and parts of old roads can be seen beneath the clear water, adding a sense of mystery and melancholy to the area. The submerged village has become a symbol of the balance between human development and the environment, highlighting the cost of progress.

The ongoing #excavations on the summit of #Papoura Hill, #Crete, conducted at a height of 494 m, to the north-east of #Kastelli and the construction site of the new airport, have yielded a #monumental #architectural complex of circular shape, which is unique for the #Minoan #archaeology.
This monumental structure consists of eight concentric stone rings with an average thickness of 1.40 meters and a maximum estimated height of 1.7 meters, developed on different elevation levels. At the center, these rings form a circular building (Zone A) with a diameter of 15 meters, constructed with corbelled masonry. The interior of Zone A, with a diameter of 9 meters, is divided into four quadrants. Zone A is surrounded by a second main zone (Zone B), with a maximum width of 6.9 meters, where radial walls intersect the lower-level rings, creating smaller spaces. As the excavation progresses, a labyrinthine arrangement is revealed, with narrow openings connecting the spaces. Two potential main entrances to the central zones have been discovered on the southwest and northwest sides.Ongoing excavations on the summit of Papoura Hill, situated at an altitude of 494 meters northwest of Kastelli town and near the construction site of a new airport runway, have unveiled a monumental architectural complex. This circular structure, unique in Minoan archaeology, has a diameter of approximately 48 meters and covers an area of around 1800 square meters. Located at the highest point of the hill, this site was originally expropriated for the installation of surveillance systems (radar) for the new airport.

Located on the southeast coast of Crete, is a beautiful, sandy stretch of coastline known for its crystal-clear waters and serene atmosphere. Ideal for relaxation, swimming, and water sports, it offers a peaceful escape with stunning views, surrounded by lush hills #crete #travel #discover #greece
Istron Golden Beach, located on the southeast coast of Crete, is a hidden gem known for its natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. Situated near the village of Istron, this sandy beach is a perfect escape from the crowds, offering crystal-clear waters and a serene environment. The beach is framed by rugged hills, creating a stunning backdrop of olive groves and lush greenery. The clear, shallow waters are perfect for swimming, while the soft golden sand makes it ideal for sunbathing.

Unlike some of Crete's more famous beaches, Istron Golden Beach is relatively peaceful, providing a relaxing spot to unwind. It is well-equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, and beachside tavernas serving delicious local cuisine, including fresh seafood and traditional Cretan dishes. The tavernas offer wonderful views of the sea, allowing you to enjoy a meal while taking in the beauty of the surroundings.

The village of Istron, just a short distance from the beach, adds to the charm of the area. With its whitewashed houses, narrow streets, and quaint cafes, it offers a taste of traditional Cretan life. Visitors can explore the village or enjoy a coffee while watching the world go by.

Istron Golden Beach is also a great base for exploring the region. Nearby, you can visit the bustling town of Agios Nikolaos, known for its picturesque harbor and vibrant atmosphere. The beach is also close to the ancient Minoan ruins of Knossos, offering a chance to delve into Crete’s rich history and culture. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, Istron Golden Beach provides the perfect balance of both. Its natural beauty, calm waters, and proximity to local attractions make it an ideal destination for a peaceful, authentic Cretan getaway.

Follow for a lot of Photos Videos and some documentaries all about Crete. here is a first photo a top down photo of Spinalonga with my drone. #creta #crete #cretanphotostories #greece #topdown #spinalonga #travel #nature #monuments
The photo captures an aerial view of Spinalonga, a small island located off the coast of Crete, Greece. Known for its rich history and haunting beauty, Spinalonga was once a leper colony, adding a layer of historical depth to its otherwise serene landscape. From this vantage point, the rugged coastline and crystal-clear waters surrounding the island create a striking contrast against the weathered stone structures that dot the terrain.

In the foreground, the imposing Venetian fortress, built in the 16th century, stands as a testament to the island’s military importance. The fortress walls, although eroded by time and the elements, still maintain a sense of strength and resilience. The intricate network of narrow streets and buildings within the fortress is visible from above, providing a glimpse into the lives of those who once lived and worked here.

The landscape is characterized by rocky hills and the deep blue of the Aegean Sea, with boats gently bobbing in the harbor below. The arid island, with its sparse vegetation, offers a sense of isolation, a reminder of the island’s history as a leper colony from 1903 to 1957. The photo evokes a mix of melancholy and beauty, as it captures both the natural allure of the place and the weight of its past.

Spinalonga is now a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors with its unique blend of history, mystery, and natural charm. This aerial perspective highlights the island’s timeless character, where nature and history coexist in a delicate balance, making it one of the most evocative and memorable spots in Crete.
