That is because German (more specifically High German, which became the official language) underwent another consonant shift that other Germanic languages did not. d -> t is one of them.

The fun thing to me is that a good few of these differences are consistent due to how these languages evolved. Example: Englisch: "day" Dutch: "dag" German: "Tag" Notice how English and Dutch both start with <d> and German starts with <t>?

My native language is German. I learned English at school. Every time I see a Dutch text (which I do quite a bit for uni these days) it feels like a bit of a step in between?

I sort of can? I study German and English at uni, and all three of these languages are part of the Germanic languages. More even, they are all West Germanic languages. These three languages are extremely closely related.
