20 years. 20 years since my life veered off a cliff. 20 years since I woke up from the world of innocence as a child and started the path of truly growing up. 20 years since we lost the anchor to the chaos. 20 years since I lost the one who showed me what true unconditional love was.

Penny is looking at the camera wondering what you are doing reading this alt-text when trans lives, whom are already a hugely at risk population, are being pushed further and further as objectively evil oligarchs use them as a distraction to rip more and more rights from all of us.

My toxic trait: Taking my favorite author's books and turning them face out :D That one copy of @drslayton.bsky.social 's "Dark Moon Shallow Sea" _will_ be sold one day at my local booksamillion.

I ended up having more extended thoughts on Dolly Parton over on Facebook and I thought I would share them here as well.
When I was much younger, I knew her mostly as a caricature and the object of jokes, because young men are kind of stupid that way and I was no exception, and because she willingly played along with the joke, in part because she knew it would happen anyway, and this way she got to shape some of how that would play out for her, and use it for her own ends. It took me a while to realize how canny that was.

When I got older, I learned that underneath the caricature was a formidable songwriting and business mind. I had an inkling of what a rare combination that was in any person, but how even more rare it was for someone who was who she was, in the field and environment she worked in. Hidden in all those sparkles was a spine of steel.

When I got older than that I learned that in addition to a brilliant mind was a heart of kindness, which directed so much of the good fortune she amassed to herself right back out the door through philanthropic work, helping those in her communities, state and country, and which allowed to see the worth and dignity in those whom so many others treated (and still do treat) with contempt.

She was always all the things she was. What changed was my ability to see and understand who she was. I'm glad I was eventually smart enough to see it all.

Oh man. I do not know how I'm going to tell my kid. Who's love for reading is a _direct line_ from Dolly's imagination library. Who, upon learning about her, immediately put her up there with Taylor Swift as a role model (she wants to be a performer) Gutted. RIP Dolly. Thanks for it all!

@drslayton.bsky.social Doing my pre Backwoods Banshee Adam Binder Universe book listening, and my brain fixated on Vran's "I am what I'll be when the Undertakers are done with me". And thought, wait, that's a straight connection/foreshadowing to RCC instead of allusions to death, isn't it?

Actually it is good when unqueer people relate to and appreciate queer art, as opposed to the norm where they look at the cover, say "that's not for me" and then nobody makes any money or earns any prominence in queer art.

The Los Angeles Book Review says: "The Silent Paths of Night plunges the reader into the gloom and dread of treading the trails on a moonless night while sensing an unknown presence behind you. Slayton’s latest work pushes beyond fantasy into dark thriller territory."

(Also, fantasy as a genre outsold science fiction by about four to one, and romance outsold fantasy by nearly two to one, so there's some perspective for you.)

Reminder that in this house we do not trash other genres of books to support the genre we like the most. One, come on, we're grown ups. Two, the bottom line is people reading and loving books. Three, every writer you know has friends working other genres, don't trash their friends, thanks.

The Silent Paths of Night (Gods of Night and Day #2)
From David R. Slayton, bestselling author of White Trash Warlock and Rogue Community College, comes the epic sequel to the award-winning Dark Moon, Shallow Sea. For Raef, priest of the moon goddess Phoebe and one-time thief, it was too much to hope that resurrection of the moon and his mistress might set the world aright. The Grief still chokes the docks and streets of Versinae with vampiric ghosts, while the nations of Aegea prepare to war against each other. Even worse, Phoebe did not return alone. Something evil came with her. Rerek, a demon who once waged war with the gods themselves, Corpse-Taker and sower of chaos, is back to make sure there is no peace in Aegea, now or ever again. And it has a plan. Raef and his beloved Seth, knight of the sun god Hyperion, are all that stand between Rerek and utter destruction. But the ghosts of their respective pasts, the dangers they must face, and the truths that await them will test them as nothing they've yet endured. One way or another Rerek will get what it wants ... and it will use Raef and Seth to achieve it.

Back to editing secret project number one and do me a favor, if you're in the Matt Damon camp circa 2023 and still calling people the f word, maybe rethink that. Your gay friends hear it and it tells them how you feel about them: namely that they don't matter to you and aren't safe with you.

The average SNAP benefit per month is $177 a person. The average ACA benefit per month is up to $550 a person. People want us to hold the line for a reason. This is not a matter of appealing to a base. It’s about people’s lives. And working people want leaders whose word means something to them.
