Zwartbles Sheep Painted in acrylics, on a preserved Cottonwood tree leaf. Another from 2023. I wanted some abstract silliness to take the pressure off. A sheep head on a mass of wooly squiggles seemed appropriate and was fun!

A painted black sheep face with a thick white streak down the forehead, nose and lips. The head is surrounded by waves of brown squiggles that mimic the zwartbles sheep's wooly coat. The painting is on a cottonwood leaf, sitting on a white canvas background.

I love the delicate sleek features of the dark-sided flycatcher, especially the speckly streaky coloration of juveniles. Mapping out where and preserving the markings on this bird was quite a challenge, but a fun one! As was figuring out how to shade and color such a thin little creeping lichen.

A young Dark-Sided Flycatcher, in colored pencil mixed media Juvenile Dark-sided Flycatchers have a more mottled pattern with white spots, as seen. Each molt after fledging, they gradually lose these spots and develop a more uniform, ashy coloration. #birdart #flycatcher #birds

A juvenile dark-sided flycatcher with brown back and wing plumage broken up with white highlighted feather edges and white speckles, with a white neck and chest streaked with brown. The bird has a mostly gray beak attached with a bit of yellow skin, desaturated purple-pink legs and stands on a small branch with bits of minty colored, delicate fruticose lichens.

I'm so glad this worked out and I know sometimes we have few options, but for those who may emulate, there are safer and kinder ways to build trust and get closer. Eg. turning to the side, tossing tiny bits of high value food, without reaching towards or pressuring the dog to interact initially.

A Red-legged Honeycreeper, male breeding plumage, in colored pencil. Native primarily to Central and northern South America, Red-legged Honeycreepers are often found in pairs or small flocks feeding on nectar, fruit and small insects along semi-open forest edges. #birdart

A colored pencil drawing of a male Red-legged Honeycreeper in blue and black breeding plumage with a teal cap, on a white background. The bird's legs are bright reddish orange, and he's perched on a thin lumpy twig with bits of stringy moss.

Green Herons live year round in Central America, but can be found as far as the coasts of south Canada and northern South America. Only a few heron species are known to use tools, including the Green Heron! They use bits of sticks, feathers or even insects, dropped on the surface to attract fish.

I got out my colored pencils and decided to try them on a random sheet of mystery paper. This Green Heron was my warm up subject. #birdart #greenheron

Brenton's Fig A Little Deeper, aka Fig Painted in acrylics, on an 8x10 watercolor canvas panel. Fig is a sweet 9 month old Australian Shepherd. She loves many things, like rat search games, meeting friends (2 or 4 legs) and cuddling when it's nap time. See more of Fig @tailguides on IG #gamergirl

A painting of a red merle and white Australian shepherd puppy sitting in purple clouds, with over-ear headphones around her neck and a PS4 controller in front of her. Her ears are perked forward and around her are three small yellow stars.

The painting from the previous photo, on a mini easel next to the real Fig. She's laying down facing the camera with perky ears, eager eyes and a slight head tilt, showing off her fluffy neck and chest.

Fig laying down on a rug with her side to the camera now, the painting in front of her. Her expression is still attentive, her legs and tail sprawled out and relaxed.

Mia Painted with acrylics, 8x10 canvas Mia was AmStaff, Labrador and Treeing Walker Coonhound. A shelter puppy who grew into the sweetest girl with people and animals. She was naturally fearful but through counterconditioning with treats and meds she enjoyed a long, happy life full of adventures.

A portrait painting of a seal colored dog (black with underlying bronze-tan highlights) with floppy ears and white markings on her neck and chest. The background is a blue with a slightly muted blue.

A photo of the painted dog in her senior years, standing in her purple harness in the opening to a garden with bright sunlight through trees to her back. She's panting, but her mouth and eyes are soft and relaxed, her ears perked forward.

A painted bur oak leaf, depicting a portrait of a reddish brown heron with a white neck, chest and wing splotches, with a yellow and gray beak and yellow eye. The heron is against a green background.

Rory Painted with acrylics, on a 5x7 watercolor canvas panel. Rory is a happy little American Hairless Terrier to Rat Terrier outcross, who loves cheese and rewards based training with @trainandsimpledogs on Instagram. When deciding on a reference photo, I knew I had to paint her signature teefs!

A portrait painting of a young black and white dog with perked ears, a wrinkled forehead and half a lip up exposing a few lower incisors. The background is solid magenta.

The black and white puppy Rory laying on a cushion, just behind the painting of her.

The little black and white puppy from the painting, laying on a cushion, with a wrinkled head and one lip exposing her incisors as in the painting.

European Tree Frog (hyla arborea) An acrylic painting on a preserved leaf from a Western Snowberry shrub (symphoricarpos occidentalis). Like the shrubs themselves, these leaves are hardy compared to most, satisfying to preserve and paint. I also love their gently curved shapes.

A painted leaf on a white canvas background. The painting is a side view portrait of a european tree frog. The frog is green with a brown stripe starting at the nose, it has creamy tan lips and throat with a gold-ish eye, on a dark navy background.

The same painted leaf, held in the palm of my hand for scale.

Emerald Tree Monitor, or Green Tree Monitor Painted in 2023 with acrylics on a preserved cottonwood leaf. My angel of a dog who never chews up anything of mine, chewed the first version of this. My bad for using a canvas that smells like the leaf litter she plays in outside. 😅 Not for sale.

A painted leaf, depicting a green lizard with a long curled tail sitting on a branch. The background is a blue-gray abstract background with fireflies.

Overlayed on the previous picture is the text:

What is an Emerald Tree Monitor?

Monitor lizards are best known for their intelligence, speed and powerful jaws. Komodo Dragons are likely the best known monitor species.

Green tree monitors are native to tropical rainforests in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and some surrounding islands.

Since they live and hunt in trees, they’ve evolved to have long prehensile tails, curved claws and larger scales on the bottom of their feet to improve traction.

Blue Jay, 2023 Painted with acrylics on a real, preserved choke cherry tree leaf. One of my favorite leaves to paint on because of their rounded shape and relative durability. Bonus fun fact, I played audio of blue jay calls while editing this, which elicited much head tilting from my dog. SOLD

A painted leaf, depicting the bird's back with head turned to the left. The bird is perched on a thin branch and the background is a green-teal with abstract translucent snowflakes of various sizes.

Overlayed on the previous picture is the text:

Like fellow corvids such as crows and magpie, blue jays are highly intelligent.

They are great imitators! Widely known for mimicking hawk calls to warn other birds or to scare other birds away from resources.

Blue Jays love oak acorns and primarily eat plant based food, but they will snack on small animals and even other birds!

These birds are very social, not only with their mates but larger groups that may work cooperatively in winter. Food offerings solidify bonds.

In the bottom right corner is a silly cartoon line drawing of a bright blue bird in a reddish brown trench coat and hat, saying "IM A HAWK"
