How we made global routing faster with Bloom filters - Vercel
We replaced slow JSON path lookups with Bloom filters in our global routing service, cutting memory usage by 15% and reducing 99th percentile lookup times from hundreds of milliseconds to under 1 ms. Here’s how we did it.

I see people get mad at genAI for the power it uses comparing it to bitcoin. It does use a significant amount of electricity, but let's compare: - driving to the library in my economy EV (1 kwh) - a single bitcoin transaction (1500 kwh) - generating a single image with stable diffusion (0.01 kwh)

I'm back on paternity leave for 5 more weeks. I took the first 6 weeks when she was newborn, now she's a cute 3-month old. My wife just started nursing school a week ago and so I've had all 8 kids to myself all day. So much fun and adventure! And I thought my day job was challenging.

This one is still bugging me, it won't go away. But I'm constantly stuck on finding a good problem I can solve well. Market research is so hard, especially when people you're don't know what they need/want because they can't imagine it existing. We're too dependent on large free cloud services.

I don't know why, but this function implementation really makes me happy. It took me way too long to get it right, but it's just perfect now :D
export function eytzinger<T>(arr: T[]): T[] {
  const n = arr.length
  const tree = new Array(n)
  let i = 0
  function build(k: number): void {
    if (k > n) return
    build(2 * k)
    tree[k - 1] = arr[i++]
    build(2 * k + 1)
  }
  build(1)
  return tree
}

I keep getting this feeling like there is something I need to build and put out in the world (business or service or product) related to my various system designs, (rando, caify, nibs, encantis, etc...) but I can't, for the life of me, figure out what would actually be useful to most people.

I'm very proud these folks are succeeding to make decentralized open source social nets mainstream. I tried with Manyverse and failed, but I realize that all the bold advocacy and predictions I did for decentralized open protocols was... after all correct.

Some light reading.
Several books on a homemade desk about programming, soft skills, management, the meaning of life, and classic science fiction.

Also seen are a lock, a caribeaner and large magnetic spheres in a circle.

I'm finally reading up on AT protocol and realizing my short time working on IPLD and CAR with @why.bsky.team was very helpful in understanding it all. It's a great generic system, but I still wonder if it's efficient enough for my needs or if I should mix in some of my more optimized designs.

@pfrazee.com I was thinking about Beaker and wondering how much of that experience I can bring back. I don't want to maintain an electron app or fork chromium, but I am wondering if I can at least make sharable hyperdrives using a collection of AT Protocol records in place of hypercore?

I'm allergic to cats, and yet we rescued this stray a while ago. He is the most snuggly and grateful kitty I've ever seen. I was working outside building a shed, and he walked up to me asking for snuggles. You can hear the purring across the room when I hold him like this.

One of the plastic bits in my car's charger port fell off while on a road trip to Austin (500 miles away). Luckily the piece was jammed inside and I was able to pull it out and reattach it! I was so close to buying a 3d printer, reverse engineering the other piece and cloning it.

Sometimes I get very frustrated that my Modafinil medication is so hard to get. It's Schedule IV here in the US which means most local doctors refuse to even prescribe it!. However caffeine has a similar or worse risk/addiction profile and it's OTC and barely regulated when used as an ingredient.

This finally feels like a proper social network. I've had my first interaction where some stranger jumps into a conversation I'm having with a friend, throws up a strawman that looks like something I said and then attacks it and posts on their own profile how I'm such an idiot. It's been a while...

I'm constantly explaining to people that generative AI optimizes for looking correct. It has no idea if something is actually correct. This is a problem when it starts writing code for us that looks right and appears right when run, but actually has extremely subtle bugs.

@pfrazee.com what ever happened to the dat protocol? Is it still a good idea or have we all moved on? I'm looking for something lightweight for P2P syncing of data between devices. I like the idea of a PHAMT on top of some distributed log, but looking closely at dat, it seems really expensive.
