It’s a disingenuous stat though. It’s being presented as fact that “it’s never been a home run so it certainly couldn’t be a home run” when the parameters are to narrow. There *have* been balls hit further than 342 feet with 49° launch angle and lower EV than 105 MPH.

It was (still is?) trendy for the kids to be spouting, “Safari is the new IE6”. I’ve long planted my flat on the hill that “Chrome/Chromium is the new IE”. As a Firefox user and as time goes on, I find I’m proven more and more right and it’s maddening and saddening.

Sure but local models will be a niche product. Like desktop Linux. Or self-hosted media servers. Or vanilla Android. On-prem vs hosted has many trade offs and the debate rages. What laypeople see with AI is a solution in search of a problem, thrust upon them, and it now becoming a political issue

I don’t think the pessimism about AI is inherently about the technology. It’s distrust in tech companies. It’s pushback against marketing hyperbole, against the barrage of being told it’s going to replace us, against rising costs from hoarding. It’s emblematic of a lot of distasteful things
