These photos taken by DEP inspector on 2/26/26, show 2 working face areas at Bethlehem Landfill. Report notes that the working face exceeds the 100' x 100' size (1/4 acre). How large is it in these photos? 1 acre? 2 acres? DEP, you are allowing this? Yet another reason for this dump to close!

In its consent order of 1/14/26, PA DEP listed Bethlehem Landfill's persistent failures, some going back to 2020! Inadequate waste covering, failed inspections, & significant offsite odors that affected local residents. No wonder so many of us oppose any expansion being planned. #NoLandfillExpansion

This truck, operated by a carrier from Chicago, Illinois, was cited on 10/15/25 at Bethlehem Landfill by PA DEP. It had no markings indicating that it's carrying MSW. Also it didn't have written authorization from DEP to carry waste. #NoLandfillExpansion

Violation "Not determined"?: "Gas recovery conducted as per approved plan, including annual analysis; section 273.293 (a)(b)". It seems the DEP inspector questioned whether BLC's gas recovery plan is being followed, since there were several instances of gas odors & methane leaks found on 9/16/25.

On 9/16/25, the PA DEP inspector noted problems of fugitive emissions at the Southeast section of the dump. Here is an uncapped marker where leachate was seeping on the surface, and the methane level was measured at 6200PPM! The report also noted strong landfill gas odors in several areas.

Here's an excerpt from the 9/16/25 DEP inspection report on Bethlehem Landfill. A notice of violation related to air quality standards remains outstanding due to BLC's inability to control air contaminants. With such a pattern of failures, why should this dump be allowed to expand?

Studies of ETLF show that coal ash can be a source of heat generation after it mixes with water. Coal ash contains alkaline metal oxides that when hydrated, produce carbonates. Hydration and carbonation release heat. When heat is trapped deep inside a landfill, pyrolysis can occur. buff.ly/Qz7yivF

What's an Elevated Temperature Landfill? (ETLF) Reactions occur inside a landfill, from 4 factors 1. certain types of waste become fuel; 2. Breakdown of waste creates heat; 3. air enters when gas wells create vacuum. 4. Excessive leachate or waste compaction holds heat in. This can create pyrolysis.
