A coloured lithograph in dark tones of primarily bold black, red, and blue, showing a busy street scene in France. trolley rolls by under a line of trees on the far left, while next to it in the main portion of the art is a long, ornate building with multiple floors; there are large windows on the first floor, each with a figure standing at the balcony looking down at the street below, while on the ground floor is a busy café or restaurant, with lots of patrons at the bistro tables, waiters walking around serving drinks, a newspaper stand nearby and people milling about an talking. An advertisement for a can-can show is taking up a section of the building's facade behind the newspaper stand.

We’re wrapping up our #folklore and mythology theme with Séamus Murphy’s ‘Deirdre (of the Sorrows)’. Please note this post briefly mentions self-harm in the context of ancient legends. Deirdre is a significant, tragic figure in #Irishlegends, and has found comparison to Helen of Troy.
A bronze statue of a woman from the neck up; her neck is laid down to the side, as if she was sleeping, and her eyes are closed, her mouth slightly open. There are muscles straining in her neck, hinting towards her not being sleeping at all; and she has long hair that is wavy and falls over one shoulder. The statue is seen in front of a black background. The same statue, but seen in front of a white background, lending depth to some of the details of the statue and showing more of the texture.

Happy #AutumnEquinox ! To celebrate, we’re taking a look at Edith Somerville’s painting, ‘A Holy Place of the Druids or Grave of a Chieftain’. The artist often accompanied her brother on his surveys of numerous megaliths located near their native Castletownshend, County Cork. One of those

It’s time for another look at mythology and folklore in the collection! Today we’re focusing more specifically on the ‘mythology’ side of this month’s theme, and pivoting from Ireland to look back to ancient Rome and the goddess of harmony, Concordia. #CrawfordArtGallery #mythology #mythologyinart
A plaster sculpture of a regal looking woman, seated on an ornate throne and draped in extensive robes, holding a sceptre in one hand and a patera (or dish) in the other, and a diadem around her head. She is dressed in an ancient Roman fashion, and the sculpture is detailed, visually grand and majestic.

Our next themed work for this month delves in the fascinating and vast realm of Irish folklore. ‘Stray Sod’ (2019-20) is a screenprint by Debbie Godsell that draws on past customs that have contemporary resonance. ‘Irish folklore,’ the artist explains, “is underpinned by the understanding that the

It’s a new month, which means it’s time for a new theme! For September, we’re diving into mythology and folklore in the collection, starting with this beautiful oil painting by Jennifer Trouton. 'Ariadne’s Thread' (2013) gets its title from the Ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur,
An oil on linen painting showing a spool of thread set on the floor in the foreground, in a patch of light. Behind the spool of thread is a wall with a patterned wallpaper, showing repeating images of a loom, cotton factory, and abandoned house. Hanging on the wall is a frame, the sides visible, but whatever is held in the frame is covered by a long cloth that drapes to the floor, ending just next to the spool of thread. The cool tones of the long cloth contrast with the warmer tones of the rest of the work, with the white thread in stark contrast to the wall, floor, and cloth.A zoomed-in look at the spool of thread the bottom of the cloth and all of its folds, and the patterned wall paper showing the tiny, intricate details of all of the elements of the painting.

A vibrant and sumptuous oil-on-canvas painting of a goods laid out on a table; there are bowls of silver, fresh fish, both red and black olives, and peppers; strewn on a fabric on the table are apples and jars of various picked and prepared foods, a large cabbage, and a ripe watermelon with a wedge cut out sitting centre. To the side is a large basket overflowing with leeks, purple cabbage, aubergines, and more fresh cabbage. Everything is beautifully coloured and inviting, fresh, and almost luxurious looking - this is emphasized by various silk clothes bunched in around the edges of the table.A plaster sculpture of a woman with a lined face, her shawl brought up and draped over the top of her head and shoulders, smiling slightly as she holds handfuls of onions. The plinth that she stands on reads 'Mary Anne.'A slightly different view of the same sculpture, turned so that Mary Anne is seen from the side rather than straight-on. Her slight smile is still visible, as are the various folds of her shawl and simple dress.

Happy World Photography Day! #WorldPhotographyDay commemorates the invention of the daguerreotype, a photographic process developed by Louis Daguerre in 1837. Here’s a peek at just some of the beautiful photos we have in the collection, from portraits of familiar faces to dreamy underwater scenes.
A black and white photo of an older man with hands in his pockets and a faint smile leaning in a dark doorway framed by large vertical letters on either side of him reading "HI-B BAR," while a partially visible person seems to be walking into the frame but is not yet fully visible; a quiet moment outside of a pub in Cork City Centre.A vivid photograph of a woman standing in the shallows of a beach inlet, up to her ankles in water, pouring water over her head from a flowering can while a chair next to her is on fire and billowing dark smoke into the clear sky.A photographic portrait of footballer Roy Keane, looking directly into the camera with a direct, wide and intense gaze. He is holding up the skull of a bird with a long beak that is partially opened, and the open top and bottoms of the beak frame his right eye.A vividly crisp black and white photo of a stack of flat rocks, likely from a building or part of a paving, stacked in a short tower with holes, cracks and layers visible. The photo is completely empty of colour but the details of the stones are crisp and clear.
