It's time for Calgary and Edmonton to have a referendum on separating from Alberta.

It doesn't matter to Smith and Ford whether the ludicrous project gets built. What matters to them is whether the scapegoat gets built. If Carney's rationale for creating favourable conditions for O&G development is that it will destroy the scapegoat, he will find that the scapegoat is a phoenix.

They are dead serious. This is exactly how they construct a new scapegoat. Carney reduces permitting requirements? Ford and Smith demand ultra fast execution. The demands will never stop. The goalposts will never stay still. This is the fatal flaw in Carney’s plan.

Municipal, provincial, and federal governments have been bailing the O&G industry out of their failures for decades. I have seen no indication that this time would be any different. The argument that Carney is somehow smarter, wilier, etc., than his predecessors, completely ignores this reality.

It does not matter whether the scapegoat is real. It only matters whether enough people believe it's real. And the UCP (and their predecessors) have done an excellent job of convincing a lot of people that their imaginary scapegoat is real.

You know why. You may not be willing to say it out loud, or maybe even to yourself, but deep down you know why.

As a Canadian, I am cool with this. We want Trump to move on from us. If he's going to get together with Belarus, I say let him go for it.

It’s classic abusive behaviour to try to cut off the victim from their support structures.

Is the MOU itself public? (Maybe I'm blind and don't see it on that page)

This lesson extends beyond politics, I think. This is how you beat all bullies: joy and community give you strength, and ruthless dedication is how you deploy the strength.

I think attitude has always been more powerful than ideology. (e.g., any "conservative" government that says they're good money managers.) We vote with our hearts, not with our brains.

One thing I don’t get is why insurance companies still insure fossil fuel projects and companies.

If Carney's actions don't impact electoral outcomes, the UCP's behaviour, or the "economic reality", then what does it do? Apart from making it easier to burn more fossil fuels, that is.

You are allowed, of course, to believe that the UCP will not find another straw man to yell about, or that voters will have their eyes opened by Carney’s “bluff”. I don’t.

Canada should have six cities that are not part of any province: Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton.

I am also vhemently against this use (and the vast majority of uses) of LLMs, but I don't see the class divide. Ask your working-class friends if they use LLMs. Do they ask LLMs how to do repairs around the house? To "fact-check"? For help with social situations? For help with their kids' homework?

I think the concern is that if the bus is unbearably hot, people will drive instead, which far exceeds the additional emissions from AC on the bus. Not to mention all the other externalities from driving.

Electric system operators around the world have been wilfully blind to the energy transition, and as a result they are ill equipped to navigate it. This has been their choice all along, and now they throw up their hands and claim it's impossible.

While you are busy making fun of Smith and Ford, Carney keeps watering down our climate policy and flirting with the O&G CEOs. Every time Smith signs an MOU she gets more concessions. Carney has yet to call her on any BS. Who is living in the land of make-believe?

Thank you for sharing. Assessing less degradation obviously helps the owner of the solar plant by generating more revenue, but it also helps offtakers sign longer PPAs and lenders give better debt terms. All of this means cheaper electricity with less uncertainty. It’s win-win-win.

I don’t have a sound bite or a quote to send you. But blanket rezoning was the biggest policy issue in the last election. The candidates’ platforms and the councillors’ voting records are publicly available. You can choose whether quotes or actions will guide your world view.

Mike, you are smarter than this. “The left” has been saying these things for a long time. For a recent example, see the blanket rezoning debate in Calgary.

Carney has two clear, immediate opportunities to show us how he can get stuff done on electrification: - Quebec/NL MOU - Alberta's de facto moratorium on renewables With electricity in provincial jurisdiction, if he's going to effect change, he'll have to get in there. So far, I've seen nothing.
