Subject: RE:
There is lots to discuss regarding other work, interesting people, etc...how about spending an afternoon together, the 15" or 16" of June? Does either of these dates work for you?
About Martin, these are the details: his rent and the associated overhead that Harvard takes is about $400k per year, or $2m over 5 years (this is absolute minimum to keep him there and operating); his idditional amounts for scholarship/scholars outside of the Templeton grant is about twice that amount is current running budget is $1.2M per year (or $6M over 5 years). When we made the $11M grant, we though that this would scale up and expand his exceptional center and work, so if we could somehow raise S6M to add our $11M to that would be ideal. That is what I think we should aim for.
Also, just FYI, I'm going to be asking Templeton to approve an additional $2M. supplement for broad philosophical/applied questions after year 2 of the project, so this will further amplify the importance of Martin's work, which can not be understated- he is a genius."

Today marks the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act - a landmark piece of legislation that Judy Heumann was instrumental in the passage of. In her memoir Being Heumann, Judy describes this day 35 years ago… (via www.facebook.com/TheHeumannPe...)
A photo of Judy Heumann at a protest next to Justin Dart, Marca Bristo, and others. Below in white text is a quote from Being Heumann: "“July 26, 1990, was a glorious summer day in Washington D.C. 3,000 people were gathered on the South Lawn of the White House. In front, standing on a platform, was President George H.R. Bush, with Justin Dart as his side. As President Bush began to speak, a hush fell on the enormous crowd. ‘Let the shameful wall of exclusion finally come tumbling down,’ he said. And he sat down at a desk and signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law. Our time had come. After nearly 20 years of protesting 5 presidents, Republican and Democratic - from one coast to the other - we had created, what I believe to be, the strongest, most comprehensive civil rights legislation for disability in the world.”

"May We Raise Children Who Love the Unloved Things" by N. Sowder May we raise children who love the unloved things–the dandelion, the worms and spiderlings. ... And when they’re grown & someone has to speak for those who have no voice may they draw upon that wilder bond ... and be the ones.
May We Raise Children Who Love the Unloved Things
by Nicolette Sowder

May we raise children
who love the unloved
things–the dandelion, the
worms and spiderlings.
Children who sense
the rose needs the thorn

& run into rainswept days
the same way they
turn towards sun…

And when they’re grown &
someone has to speak for those
who have no voice

may they draw upon that
wilder bond, those days of
tending tender things

and be the ones.

"In colleges and universities, teaching is often the least valued of our many professional tasks" (bell hooks, 1994) «Dans les universités, l'enseignement est souvent la tâche la moins valorisée parmi nos nombreuses responsabilités professionnelles» (bell hooks, 1994) via @humrespro.bsky.social‬
My commitment to engaged pedagogy is an expression of political activism. Given that our educational institutions are so deeply invested in a banking system, teachers are more rewarded when we do not teach against the grain. The choice to work against the grain, to challenge the status quo, often has negative consequences. And that is part of what makes that choice one that is not politically neutral. In colleges and universities, teaching is often the least valued of our many professional tasks. It saddens me that colleagues are often suspicious of teachers whom students long to study with. And there is a tendency to undermine the professorial commitment of engaged pedagogues by suggesting that what we do is not as rigorously academic as it should be. Ideally, education should be a place where the need for diverse teaching methods and styles would be valued, encouraged, seen as essential to learning. Occasionally students feel concerned when a class departs from the banking system. I remind them that they can have a lifetime of classes that reflect conventional norms. (bell hooks, Teaching to Transgress, 1994)

"I have never seen anywhere in the world such a large proportion of intelligent, happy, and intelligently occupied children. They were not lined up for inspection." (Dewey, 1929) books.google.de/books?id=ruA...
"I have never seen anywhere in the world such a large proportion of intelligent, happy, and intelligently occupied children. They were not lined up for inspection.
We walked about the grounds and found them engaged in their various summer occupations, gardening, bee-keeping, repairing buildings, growing flowers in a conservatory (built and now managed by a group of particularly tough boys who began by destroying everything in sight), making simple tools and agricultural implements, etc.
Not what they were doing, but their manner and attitude is, however, what stays with me--I cannot convey it; I lack the necessary literary skill."

-archive- ""That's ... Marx!" Murmured the participants at this year's General Meeting of the PULS-BeeF when the prominent guest in a wheelchair was pushed into the hall shortly before the start of the conference. The applause for Marx was hesitant at first, as many had not expected it 1/3
This image is a scanned page from a publication featuring a group of people in a social or conference setting. The text is in German, and the page appears to discuss disability rights or inclusion. It features individuals, some of whom are using wheelchairs, gathered around tables. The caption at the bottom mentions Marx, labor, and discrimination, comparing historical workers' struggles to those faced by people with disabilities.

Alt Text: White Panther Party 10-Point Program Document

This image is a scanned copy of a typed document titled “WHITE PANTHER PARTY 10-POINT PROGRAM.” The document lists ten points:

	1.	Full endorsement and support of the Black Panther Party’s 10-Point Program.
	2.	Total assault on the culture by any means necessary, including rock and roll, dope, and “fucking in the streets.”
	3.	Free exchange of energy and materials — demand to end money.
	4.	Free food, clothes, housing, dope, music, bodies, medical care — everything free for everybody.
	5.	Free access to information media — free the technology from “greed creeps.”
	6.	Free time and space for all humans — dissolve all unnatural boundaries.
	7.	Free all schools and structures from corporate rule — turn the buildings over to the people at once.
	8.	Free all prisoners everywhere — “they are our brothers.”
	9.	Free all soldiers at once — no more conscripted armies.
	10.	Free the people from their “leaders” — leaders “suck” — all power to all the people — “freedom means free everyone.”

Following the points, there is an additional statement:

“Our program is cultural revolution through a total assault on the culture, which makes use of every tool, every energy, and every media we can get our collective hands on. We take our program with us everywhere we go and use any means necessary to expose people to it.” Signed by John Sinclair, Minister of Information.

Below this is another statement:

“We take as our heroes, those that we have been told to hate and to fear: Eldridge Cleaver, Rap Brown, Fidel. The Red Guard are our Brothers, the Black Panthers are our Brothers, we join with them in the liberation of the planet.” Signed by Pun Plamondon, Minister of Defense. 7.	We want an immediate end to police brutality and murder of Black people.
	8.	We want freedom for all Black men held in federal, state, county, and city prisons and jails.

	10.	We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice, and peace, and as our major political objective, a United Nations-supervised plebiscite to be held throughout the Black colony in which only Black colonial subjects will be allowed to participate, for the purpose of determining the will of Black people as to their national destiny.
