We test whether users choose these platforms to protect their privacy from Big Tech or for political reasons (e.g. anti-establishment views). Right-wing ideology, especially, predicts use of these platforms. Yet, alternative platforms are used in addition to, not instead of established platforms /3

Our large sample allows us to look at these relatively rarely used platforms: Telegram, Signal, Parler, VK, Gettr. We find that MIMS are used more frequently than alternative social networks. There are somewhat distinct types of alternative platforms that differ in their affordances. 2/

Counterspeech, but not silencing, is related to openness and low neuroticism. So less fearful individuals and those more open to new experiences are more likely to engage in active bystander reactions to online political hostility. 2/3 www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Almost 2/3 of our sample see political content on the platform at least occasionally. Even in the process of conducting this study, we realized that many still underestimate the importance of Twitch for political communication. 3/

We find that about 20% of our (quota) sample use Twitch. Most studies of Twitch understandably focus on gaming. But more & more influencers, journalists & politicians use the platform. So what about politics? 2/

Partisan sorting & polarization plays a role as well. Trumps barrage of nonsense gave rise to an entire fact-checking cottage industry & the fight for truth became a rallying cry in many major institutions. Did that convince Trump supporters? No, it deepened their partisan animosity/lowered trust

Let me kick off my Bluesky experience by advertising this book launch event 👇🏼 My great co-author Giulia Ranzini will be there to present our chapter. I think neither Sabine nor Philipp are here yet to post this, they deserve all the credit though - for the event and the fantastic handbook 👏🏼
