I want you to understand what it is like to live in Chicago during this time.

Every day my phone buzzes. It is a neighborhood group: four people were kidnapped at the corner drugstore. A friend a mile away sends a Slack message: she was at the scene when masked men assaulted and abducted two people on the street. A plumber working on my pipes is distraught, and I find out that two of his employees were kidnapped that morning. A week later it happens again.

An email arrives. Agents with guns have chased a teacher into the school where she works. They did not have a warrant. They dragged her away, ignoring her and her colleagues’ pleas to show proof of her documentation. That evening I stand a few feet from the parents of Rayito de Sol and listen to them describe, with anguish, how good Ms. Diana was to their children. What it is like to have strangers with guns traumatize your kids. For a teacher to hide a three-year-old child for fear they might be killed. How their relatives will no longer leave the house. I hear the pain and fury in their voices, and I wonder who will be next.

It was great to run into @evangriffith.bsky.social at the @vcfa.bsky.social summer residency! Evan was a TA in a @thewritingbarn.bsky.social course I took 3 years ago. He’s teaching now in WCYA & I’m graduating from the film program, but we still share a love for picture books and storytelling!

My first manuscript is out on submission, and I’m curious how other #authors handle it. Do you ask to see all your rejections? Just actionable ones? Or none at all? Me, I’ve asked to see only actionable rejections. Otherwise, I don’t want to know 🙉🙈 unless it’s good news… What about you?

But all I want is Mama’s pysanka. The one she made when she was my age. At her school, it won first prize. Everyone said it was perfect. Maybe by Easter, I will be perfect, too. Mama melts the wax, and I scoop it into my kistka. Then we start.

From INESSA'S BEGINNING (600 words) Mama tries to cheer me up. “Look, Inessa. An Easter egg contest. You can make a pysanka!” At home, she spreads out everything we need: Eggs, candles, spoons, and colorful dyes. Even the beeswax and kistka [stylus] that Baba snuck into our suitcase.

Ran a 5k today and out of 140 people, I came in…🥁🥁🥁 LAST! A new mum pushing a stroller and several senior citizens all beat me. Still got my medal though, and a mince pie. My outfit alone earned it. 💅 Merry Christmas, nerds. ☃️🏃‍♀️💨
