Good news for children in families with no recourse to public funds as more will now be eligible for free school meals in England. Schools and govt should work together to ensure all eligible children can benefit from this expansion. www.gov.uk/government/p...

The price shock has not hit familes evenly. Inflation was steepest for essentials, which make up a larger share of poorer households’ spending. As a result, the rise in non-housing costs since 2019 has been around one-sixth bigger for the poorest tenth of households than for the richest tenth.

We know that abolition of the two-child limit has already improved the health, learning and happiness of children. It's time for all political parties to look to build a better future for everyone, not argue about re-running failed experiments of the past.

If we learnt anything from austerity it’s that cutting social security support drives up child poverty and cuts young people off from opportunity. Much better training & employment support is needed but blocking access to UC would not remove young people from jeopardy. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The PM’s thinking about the long term is crucial but action is also urgently needed to remove millions of children from poverty now.

Families are still paying the price of austerity cuts to our social security safety net. With living costs continuing to rise, these proposals are a fast track to increased poverty and are the last thing people need as they try to get back on their feet.

This cost-of-living government can and must restore investment in child benefit in the forthcoming Budget so that all parents are able to give their children a fair shot at success. 5/5

Most parents receiving child benefit say they greatly value it. 81% say it is an important part of their monthly budget that they couldn’t manage without. We estimate that it is worth £5 a week less than it was in 2010 for an eldest child as a result of cuts and freezes. 4/5

'... someone was laughing or bullying [my child] because... three days in a row, he had a packed lunch instead of a proper meal from school... it's quite tough... because I'm not managing to give him every single day the money so he will have the same lunch as his friends.'

'Hopefully with this [free school meals] things will get better, and I’ll be a lot more happier because I do stress a lot and it's not fair because then the children notice that I'm stressed and it is always to do with money, always.'

'My hope... is that my children settle into their new school, that they feel comfortable, they enjoy the new environment, they enjoy their school meals. I remember when I was a kid that school meals was a very important part of the school day. So, you know, I want them to embrace that and enjoy it.'

What will expanded free school meals in England mean for families? We spoke to some parents whose children will be newly eligible. This is what some of them told us: 'They're going to be eating the same [as their friends]. They're going to be much… closer. They're not going to be odd ones.'

Ring the bell for this school year – one to celebrate as more kids in England get free meals to fuel them through the day. Kids in hard-up families will get the food they need to learn & thrive & there will be a little more money at home – for parents it’s a bit of all-important breathing space. 1/2

We spoke to @goodmorningbritain.bsky.social about free school meals in England - more kids will be eligible from Sept but many families aren't aware. 'We are calling on govt depts to step up and make sure they do the job properly... schools and local authorities don't know who's newly eligible.'
Still from our head of education policy Kate Anstey's appearance on Good Morning Britain.

Wider eligibility for free school meals in England will give hard-up families some badly-needed breathing space. But our new analysis shows the government has left the job half done. With so many families struggling, it must ensure children get what little help is available.
