I spent a total of 648 hours in photoshop working on this. That doesnt even include the absurd amount of research and reference gathering I had to do. I put together a pretty dense collection of the process for all this if you're interested too. A LOT of lessons learned

/6 in the end, remember to experiment, play with colors, and don't rely too much on layer types like Multiply. they are great tools but if you treat them as a necessity, they become a limitation. apologies if it was too vague, hopefully there was something helpful amidst the gibberish ^^;

5/ also, remember the value of fresh eyes! both when it comes to yours, take breaks to get a clearer view of your picture, but also friends and others! :D when you stare at a piece for long, you stop seeing as much as others will at a glance - that it's too blue or too dark, and such.

4/ enough! it may come as both a surprise or not but when painting gory bits, it's a great idea to look at real images, while knowing and staying within your own limits of course. i might be on some sort of list after designing Nugget, whoops, my search history was suspicious at best.

3/ it mainly depends on what you're drawing/painting. study the subject, stare at it, color-pick from segments and smear the colors to see how they look alone and how together they change your perception of them. and i will repeat again and again, because you can't emphasize the value of references

2/ movie frames, analyze them, see what makes them tick. there's often way more going on there than you initially think there is. of course, that goes very well with some good old color-theory theory, just learning what colors mean what and what's not :) if you don't have a specific scenery in mind,
