It could be a physiological problem for sure, or the fact that you gained weight could have been a trigger that made a subconscious trauma move. But you have to talk about it with your therapist first of course!!

There were certain things that were connected to old traumas and people who had hurt and traumatized me. I literally had to fight them in the nightmares and resolve certain things within the dream to make them go away.. Now I'm better and have much fewer of them.

I don't know for your specific case but i suffer from ptsd, and for a long period of my life i had night terrors and sleep paralisys everyday it was terrifying, and i know it's sounds crazy😭but the only thing that helped was analyzing with my therapist what was happening in the dream.
