What a stunner! Enjoyed absolutely incredible views of this Arctic-bound White-billed Diver (aka Yellow-billed Loon) in full breeding plumage at West Burrafirth, Shetland yesterday. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

Is there any satisfactory explanation as to why some subsaharan migrants arrive earlier in W Europe? eBird observer coverage is decent in Poland now so that’s probably not the reason /eBird map for Marsh Warbler on 8/05/26.

This will wind a few people up but I believe this article, despite my dislike of trophy hunting, contains some good arguments. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A ban on trophy hunting would harm, not help, conservation | Letter
Letter: Prof Amy Dickman, Prof Adam Hart, Dr Dan Challender and Dr Dilys Roe say trophy hunting benefits lions and many other species by conserving more land in Africa than national parks do

A recent study has examined whether non-native parrots in European cities compete directly with native birds or occupy ecological roles that are otherwise underrepresented in urban systems:

Parrots establish novel ecological roles in European cities
Research in Italian cities shows that non-native parrot species occupy ecological roles absent from native urban bird communities, rather than simply overtaking them.

Several male Goshawks breeding deep in Poland's Białowieża Forest 'routinely travelled up to 20 km to hunt feral pigeons in a town' with the authors concluding that 'urban environments shape the foraging behaviour of raptors even within primeval forests' #ornithology 🌍 www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Main foraging areas (75% AKDE) of male Goshawks foraging
exclusively in forest (A), in forest and farmland (B), and in forest and
town (C). Foraging areas of individual birds are indicated by different
colours. The town of Hajnówka is shown in grey. White dots indicate
known active Goshawk nests.
