DC’s test scores keep getting better. How many jurisdictions can say that?

At some level in a society you do need to be able to deal with people you disagree with without things devolving into antisocial behavior. As you say an acceptable strategy is to not talk about disagreeable things, but sometimes you need to and building the skill to do it is valuable.

I think there is campaigning on it but in many ways much of the corruption we don’t know about yet and Dems will need to put sand in the gears and uncover it. Once Trump is home they need a plan for what to do about what happened, which will be hard but important.

Still gotta wait till 2028 to see whether Dems can rise to that occasion. This election is about slowing things down.

I think Dems should seriously think about whether they want to keep OMB. It’s a Nixon agency built on his conception of government. The New Deal and Great Society were built without it.

Russo Japanese War punches above its weight in importance. Launched Japan as a major power and reified its Korean and Manchurian conquests (important for WW2), demonstrated the weakness of the Russian Tsarist state leading to the 1905 uprising (precursor to 1917) and Teddy won the Nobel for peace.

I think you’re mistaking the practitioners of MAHA politics with the voters that support them.
000
counterpunkt.bsky.social @counterpunkt.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
What is the confusion here? Many MAHA voters used to vote Dem. Politicians try and appeal to different coalitions and successful ones assemble new coalitions. You can not like the MAHA people and what they’re doing, but the politics are straightforward.

One poll that was in the field before her corruption scandal. Jackson is going to have to work at it, but there’s plenty of opportunity to paint her as corrupt and aloof.

This is pretty different situation. That was one poll, it was a big outlier, and Trump has been a low propensity voter turnout machine. This is lots of polls, voters are clearly mad (lots of other measures of such sentiment), and things really are bad for farmers in Iowa for instance.

It’s incredibly rare to have a president who cared about or tried to help NYC. Last one was FDR. It remains smart of Mamdani to cultivate the relationship. Not that much else to say about it.

You have. He managed to do such bad things on the issue that it’s bad for him now. Of course that doesn’t mean that people still don’t want immigration to work differently than the pre Trump status quo. But he tanked the issue for himself.

No hunting photos of FDR obviously but he became something like a folk hero to lots of ordinary people because they knew he cared for them. John Dingel though was authentically a big hunter and gun guy and that worked for him too. Dem politicians need to be more real.

Trump is openly trying to cheat and may just declare Republicans the winners no matter what. If you don’t have a clear public rejection of that it gets far easier to pull off. If you’re not engaged in that fight I’m not sure what you’re trying to do. newrepublic.com/article/2151...

The Final Battle for America’s Democracy
Forget November 3. It’s January 3 when Donald Trump and his MAGA Republicans might bury our democracy once and for all. Here’s how.

The criticism is not over your stance on your votes not being taken for granted but about your strategy for change in a time of emergent fascist politics. Why you think Dems losing in 2026 is just something you can correct in 2028 is massively naive and dangerous in this moment.

I’m referring to Parker or really anyone getting very mad at Talarico for this. If you look at social media discourse versus what civil rights leaders from the past had to say about political leaders they were disappointed in it’s night and day. With social media anger is the prevailing emotion.

counterpunkt.bsky.social @counterpunkt.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
The problem is that social media is for getting mad. Everyone understands that you can’t behave like this in real life or in front of people who don’t agree with you. But social media has different incentives.

I will always remember a conversation I had in grad school in 2007 with a Homeland Security official who said “if there’s another 9/11 America will become a police state.” And I realize now that Homeland Security was always set up to make such a transition and they didn’t wait and just did it.

Better similarly be ready for the Dems to take 6 seats. Distributional thinking shouldn’t lead you to focus more on one type of outcome over another.
