Elections Alberta says referendum mail-in ballot applications surpass 610,000

Elections Alberta says the number of mail-in ballots requested for next month's referendum has surpassed 610,000.
The new total is an increase of about 90,000 since Friday and continues the trend of growing interest in voting by mail for the Oct. 19 referendum.
Albertans have until Friday at midnight to apply for a special mail-in ballot.
Elections Alberta says the ballots need to be returned by Oct. 16 at 5 p.m. in order to be counted.
The agency is expecting a record voter turnout for the referendum, which will see Albertans decide whether they want to remain in Canada or hold a second, binding referendum on separating from the country.
The vote is a massive undertaking for Elections Alberta. It says it has hired more than 28,000 people and received almost 52,000 applications.

Mine was mailed 3 days after they started sending them out on Sep 1. I put it in the mail back to them on Sep 8. I would say if you put your ballot in the mail back to them by Oct 5 you should be fine. I would suggest taking it to a post office where you can hand it to a person.

Complacency. Apathy. Inertia.
These are now the real adversaries for the federalist side in Alberta's Oct. 19 vote on a secession referendum.

In sports, there are certain events where the margin of victory matters in determining which athletes or teams get to advance. That is no less the case in the arena of politics.
For the secession side. a loss can still be a victory. Pro-Canada supporters have a much harder task.
The mission is not just to win, but to run up the score, so as to leave no doubt.
And when the game is this serious, the real killer is complacency.

The best voting strategy is to have
a voting strategy. Apply for a mail-in ballot before Sept. 25, and make sure it gets back
to Elections Alberta before Oct. 16. Or attend the advance voting in the week before referendum day. Do your research now. Be wary of any referendum-related material from dodgy sources that shows up in your
email or on your social media feeds. Encourage your family and friends
to do the same. For those who remain confused about the nine non-secession ques- tions, you can keep it simple, as I am
doing, and vote "No" to all of them.

EDMONTON, AB - After consulting with service providers, Elections Alberta is moving the last day to apply for a special ballot forward to September 25, 2026.

This step is being taken to ensure electors can receive and return their special ballots to Elections Alberta's
Edmonton offices by mail by the legislated deadline, 5:00pm on October 16, 2026.

"Elections Alberta wants to ensure that every elector who applies for a special ballot and returns their package by mail can do so successfully in the time allotted. After assessing current special ballot application volumes and considering the Thanksgiving holiday on Monday, October 12, we are making this change to ensure electors have enough time to cast their votes by mail," says Gordon McClure, Chief Electoral Officer, Elections Alberta.

The original deadline to apply for a special ballot was October 9, 2026. The new deadline is September 25, 2026.

Completing special ballot packages

Declarations
Special ballot packages include a declaration that electors using this voting method are required to sign and return in their special ballot package. It contains a line "I declare that I am unable to vote at an advance voting place or a voting place on Election Day" that is causing concern and confusion for electors. We recognize this is carryover language from a previous version of the Election Act which required reasons to apply for a special ballot.

The declaration will be modified to remove that line for special ballots packages that have not yet been sent out.

Ballot folding
Several electors have expressed concerns about how to fold their ballots in their special ballot package.

49 days until the advance polls open for the Alberta Referendum. They will be open October 13 to 17, 2026. #ABpoli #ABleg

Advance voting takes place from Tuesday through Saturday between 9:00am and 8:00pm the week before Election Day. While days and hours of operation may vary for some advance voting places, every electoral
division will have at least one place open for the full advance voting period.
Electors may choose to vote at any advance voting place in their electoral division. Advance voting places are commonly established in malls, community centres, libraries, work camps, universities, and other public buildings to provide electors with locations that are convenient to where they live,
work, shop, or travel. Voting in advance is the preferred option for electors who cannot attend their assigned voting place on Election Day, such as students studying away from home and people who may be working away or travelling on Election Day. Electors can vote at any advance voting place in their electoral division. Electors who cannot vote at an
advance or Election Day place can instead vote by mail.
