More furniture store moving adventures! Our landlord's employees came by today (referred to in private company as Danzig and Hillbilly Electrician) and said the landlord actually isn't too concerned about us taking a couple extra days to clear out. Tomorrow should be the last day, though!

All this to say don't assume. We got lucky here and there. One of us is very good with numbers and systems and that has benefited us but we're not remotely rich. We just wanted to try for that American dream we keep hearing about and we're determined to make it happen.

All store owners have day jobs that are basically "unskilled labor" to most. Our personal finances are paid by our day jobs. We are not the rich capitalist assholes everyone thinks all business owners are. There is no trust fund. All money the store makes goes into the store and it's barely enough.

We're 99% certain the place is a death trap but we also can't afford to move. It's a struggle just to get the rent paid. Our items are luxury goods in a town that has never been able to afford luxury. (Not a dig on the town. Just reality. The people are lovely.) Current world events make it worse.

The building was built in 1947, is likely riddled with asbestos, and leaks like a sieve. The landlord does pay a guy to patch the leaks as they crop up. They are 100% slumlord specials every single time. He's putting as little money into it as possible.

When we took over, we signed a 2 year lease. For the first year we paid $3000/month in rent along with having $1million in insurance, the property taxes on the building, and any repairs that aren't structural in nature. It's called a Triple Net Lease. The start of year 2 our rent became $3500.

Main issue: the building our store is in isn't ours. It was sold by the original owner of the building/business to some lady. She then traded it to the current owner who lives in Seattle for a condo he had in Florida. At least, I think that's what happened. Either way, it was a trade.
