Playing in Thursty's 13 Omens game with such awesome and talented gamers was the highlight of my time at KeyCon 42.

Typo of the day: Conanical It's not conanical unless it was written by Howard or happened on a late-night talk show.

"If you're going to be a hero. Be a real hero. Be strong enough to be gentle." This is the advice Larry Cullen gave to Petter Cullen that inspired his portrayal of Optimus Prime as a warm and caring leader. That, in turn, inspired generations of fans. R.I.P. Petter Cullen

One of the most fun things about writing soft sci-fi is going enough research into a science or engineering topic to write fun technobabble, forget I did that, then impressive myself with how smart my technobabble sounds.

New deal signed between Paizo and Archives Of Nethys! It's not as comprehensive as the old deal, and AoN is still limited in the art they can use, but it will continue to receive advanced PDFs, meaning we can expect new rules updates on release days! paizo.com/blog/paizo-a...

I'll take Walton Goggins as Wild Bill. Or General Hawk. Or COBRA Commander. Maybe even Snake Eyes. Basically, I don't think they can miscast Walton Goggins. Give him multiple roles! Ooh, wait, Walton Goggins as Tomax and Xamot! comicbookmovie.com/gi-joe/gi-jo...

Cartoon: Know your mutants! With thanks to @costello.bsky.social for making me think about this :)

cartoon: Cyclops from the XMen on the left firing an optic blast.
On the right is a twin of Cyclops who is wearing a visor on his butt and firing a blast out his bum.

Misreading the name of the disease going around as Cyclopsora left me with the image of a mutant that shoots a very different blast.

Running PaizoCon convinced me I have the producer chops to get back into live podcasting. It's been an important component of the Know Direction experience that has been missing. Thank goodness Beyond has been there to carry that torch. I only hope I can match the enthusiasm in Rob's eyes.

Lost Omens High Seas wasn't one of the Pathfinder books I was most looking forward to this year, but Rob's turned me around on it. I might need to set sails for adventure in the future...

They can easily switch to classic colours for a retro release. The question is, would you be OK without the quited tip, mullet, and Owen Wilson likeness?

Dawn helped my daughter feel comfortable playing with her Snake Eyes mask and sword as she got older and the gender of the characters she looked up to became more significant to her.

050

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Dawn is a rare figure that I preordered. I didn't want to miss my chance to grab this figure, especially because of my daughter.

120

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Her other head has her hair pinned up, which solves the problem if you're OK with that look.

110

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

The big downside is that the long hair of her helmeted head (my preferred look for the character) limits some neck articulation, especially when her scabbard is plugged into her back.

110

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Dawn's joints and articulation feature as wide a range of motion as your average Snake Eyes figure, able to strike some impressive poses.

120

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Her new toy is up there with the best G.I. JOE Classified figures, and might be the best female figure in the line. Hasbro has struggled with getting as much articulation out of the joints of the thinner female figures, elbows especially.

120

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

We were getting a lot of legacy characters in comics at that time and I think Dawn had one of the better backstories to justify the change, managing to thread the needle of comic nonsense and G.I. JOE's grounded universe.

120

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Actually, I may have a few details wrong. I wasn't reading ARAH at the time and still haven't read her introductory arc. But I liked the pseudoscience origin that gave her both her own identity and justified her taking on the Snake Eyes mantle.

220

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

Dawn was as an athletic citizen of COBRA-controlled Springfield. She later had the original Snake Eye's conscious uploaded into her psyche. This fast tracked her enrolment in G.I. JOE, where her knowledge of COBRA's cover city played a valuable role on missions.

120

Ryan Costello @costello.bsky.social · 22/06/2026

That's not just a number I picked because it's nice and round. She was introduced in 2016's A Real American Hero 226 by Larry Hama, but only received her first action figure this year, a few months shy of the character's 10th anniversary.

Dawn Moreno is one of the more intriguing new editions to G.I. JOE in the last 10 years.
