Thanks to the "Art of Planetary Science' for the first and second place awards! Leaving my faculty position to pursue art and music from physics was/is very risky but it is wonderful to know that others appreciate my work. #sciart
Two awards from the Art of Planetary Science for Dr. Russell Stoneback. Me! The awards are rectangular pieces of acrylic with the Art of Planetary science logo at the top, the ranking, the awardee name, and a marble like image at the bottom.Artwork created directly from science software detailing how to calculate the distribution of electric fields around the Earth. This piece celebrates the uncertainty inherent to science. Once a person starts to understand what creates the red square in the image we suddenly discover a circle. The circle is a similar red color off to the left.Punching Above (Normalized) reveals Earth's true intention to become the next Jupiter. More seriously the piece encourages us to hold those in authority to account.

Physics allows us to see the world how it truly is, rather than what we think it is. 'Polar Flowers' shows us how the Earth's magnetic field unfurls for the magnetic poles in the same way a flower opens. #sciart

'Pinnacle' explores the impact of brightness on our perception. Technically this artwork is a landscape of the Earth when viewed from space. In practical terms though this piece will literally brighten your day. #sciart

This is the "Dawn of Space". This piece emerged from my breakthrough physics in understanding the distribution of electric fields and potential around the Earth. The problem was so complex that the community considered a solution impossible. I not only solved it, I created art from it. #sciart

So over on FB I have a U.S. Congressman accusing me of being a paid agitator because I post on his page 2-3 times per day. For a psychopath who insults people on a constant basis he sure has a bunch of crocodile tears that I'm not nice to him.

I find it is hard to explain how my science is art. Fortunately, the science has been published, and hopefully the art speaks for itself. The practical difference between my science and art images is I remove the labeling and I ensure that every calculated value ends up as a pixel. #sciart #spaceart
Two figures from a peer-reviewed science publication. The content displayed is the uncertainty of a particular scientific calculation but the image that results appears like modern art.

Canvas print of my award winning "This Circle Shouldn't Be Here". This artwork reflects the joy and uncertainty within science. Technically the piece is an Earth landscape. A view of the planet from space through the lens of my plasma physics research. #sciart
A red circle and square sit atop a bright yellow background. The square is comprised of a bunch of red dots that appear like lines. Sometimes the lines diverge, revealing the underlying distribution, only to converge again. The circle is on the left and is somehow created from the same physics that creates the square.

I spoke with the Dallas Camera Club recently about my work producing art from science. It was wonderful to share my work. The feedback was amazing as well. Incidentally, anyone have the number for the Smithsonian?
Text reads "I would not be surprised if you don’t become very famous! I’m not sure if it’s gonna be in the artistic community or more likely the physics community. It would not surprise me that your your photographs wind up in some scientific place like the Smithsonian or maybe something in London."

Check out this demo of my new photonic guitar. This new instrument uses the resonance of light and electricity to make music we can't hear using colors we can't see. I made the Cosmic Guitar plugin so we can authentically hear this new music. This is the electro-indy demo. Hear the light! #sciart

"This Circle Shouldn't be There" celebrates the joy and uncertainty of science. The image was created by my science software that solves for plasma electrodynamics. Yeah, my software, which has a job to support scientific satellite measurements, also happens to produce art on the side. #sciart

Working on a NASA proposal to extend the science behind my art into a state-of-the-art space weather model for the Earth. My work is the first and only basis that enables accurate physics calculations for Earth's magnetized plasma. Sadly, that doesn't count for very much in a NASA review. #sciart
A summary of model outputs from OMMBV. Top left, locations of model values, obtained by filed line tracing from the original optimal computational grid. Top right, electric potential. C and D, the electric fields that correspond with those potentials along zonal and meridional directions. E and F, the equivalent plasma drift corresponding to the plotted electric fields. We can see from E and F that we get some expected results, like the drift signature within and around the magnetic polar cap. Plus, drifts at high and low latitudes are effectively shielded from one another.

'Fire in the Sky' is an Earth selfie. The image itself comes from physics calculations for plasma around the Earth. The colors and imagery come directly from the data. What I did was create the underlying physics code and then created custom plotting that let the data speak for itself. #sciart

Hey #sciart! As a physicist it has been a struggle to get U.S. funding agencies to take anything resembling art from science seriously. While I can't force the government to act with reason or justification I now have published proof that my approach to science is art. doi.org/10.1029/2025...
A picture of Fig. 5 from https://doi.org/10.1029/2025JA033911 that has two images, both reflecting the performance of a new solution to plasma electrodynamics that works for complicated magnetic fields. While ostensibly just science the images are simultaneously both science and art.

The new frame is up! I think this was the hardest painting job I've done. I wanted the grain to show and I didn't want paint lines, so that meant numerous thin coats and sanding in between. There was so much heat that the paint basically dried on contact. Good news though, it turned out great!
Framed artwork was created using the science behind plasma electrodynamicsZoom of art frame showing the black paint still reveals the underlying wood grain

I'm currently working on a frame for this piece here. This is the first artwork I had printed up to ensure the color gradients worked out in real life. The frame is turning out well but given the labor involved I probably won't take this route again. I have to have the frame finished by Tuesday.
