Yep, Ian Hislop has one of the best demolitions of the argument for capital punishment I’ve seen youtu.be/_DrsVhzbLzU?...

Yeah but if you’re losing 3-0 to Ireland you’re very, very bad, so not forfeiting will remove them from the nations league

For the aristocracy most probably trace lines of decent to Norman lords I imagine

Culturally, linguistically, ethnically, it’s pretty unavoidable for anyone who thinks for a second what being ‘English’ could mean. The phrase that we’re ‘mongrel’ is definitely something I’ve heard most of my life!

To be fair even the best historians are terrible at predictions. I guess the tip top would not make predictions because they recognise that (or for example - it’s hard to understand all the causes behind something until it’s long happened and you can analyse it)

He only dislikes welfare spending for the poor, he lobbies a lot for subsidies aimed at him

It’s because a lot Americans just use the UK and some of its similarities as a way to project their anxieties about the US. They often haven’t been there nor know anything avout it

Always RoI plays lipservice to reunification but in reality their policy positions represent a pragmatic policy - it’s not worth it to reunify at the price of a possible civil war in the North! Sometimes, peace is a justifiable goal!

Generally Americans don’t believe in national self determination

In WW2 Churchill offered Northern Ireland to the Republic in exchange for joining the allies against the Nazis, twice, and twice the Republic’s government said no. Sums it up.

Obv. gay marriage is good but the fact it was legalised by de facto legislation from appointed judges rather than through a democratic process exactly highlights the dysfunction of American politics and vulnerable position of minority rights

There’s a big Leeds supporter base in Norway! If you’re in Oslo while there’s a match on you can head to Dr Jekyll’s pub as that’s the Leeds sports bar

Celtic were comically terrible and still won the league. That was a once in a generation chance and it’s gone.

The recent Anthropic one was exactly that - the container allowed downloading and running packages but meant to limit access overall. Which makes sense because real agents can install packages and run them.

Immediately followed by: “The Trojans are dehumanised by their masks; we know none of them by name or face.” But she’s contradicting herself here because she mentions Athena’s visage is a victim of war earlier the essay. It just doesn’t make sense.

Indeed. E.g. “Any serious depiction of violence, ancient or modern, must show the perspectives of the victims as well as the perpetrators, and the Homeric poems easily clear the bar – but Nolan doesn’t.” Who says? Is this a royal decree on fiction?

Football is X heavy, but Reddit can be a bit of a workaround. It’s pretty bad on Bluesky frankly. Really I replaced the news part of X with “legacy” media.

I don’t particularly like The Economist, but every time a major election happens they write something like ‘here’s how X could solve the problems in Y country’ and every time the replies are like “why are you endorsing them”

One of those weird leftist tendencies to be enraged by analysis. The Afternath wrote an angry blog post recently essentially saying it’s morally wrong to care if a game studio’s game sells well unless you’re a shareholder. Just fury at even having an interest in topics beyond vibes

The irony after all this is that the cable is in fact a conspiracy theory

Even if the ball trajectory was slightly changed by an impact (which there’s no evidence for), the reaction to this is histrionic in Norway. Bellingham still beat 4 defenders and the goalie to score on the other side of the pitch.

W @cosmicpace.bsky.social · 12/07/2026
There’s just no clear photo or video showing the ball hitting a cable, anywhere. And the sensor didn’t detect anything.

I’d rather England lose than cheat and that’s not some kind of crazy attitude that’s unique to me. When Trump offered to ‘swap’ Iran with Italy every Italian comment was disgusted by the offer

W @cosmicpace.bsky.social · 06/07/2026
It might not be ‘important’ but the USA creating a victimhood narrative to justify cheating through an international sports tournament, with significant public support, sure says a lot about where it’s culture is.
