I was delighted by Yiyun Li’s MUSIC AGAINST THE NIGHT, an insightful, intricately crafted novel about the early lives of two virtuosos from starkly different backgrounds whose love of music will draw them together. Thanks to @katekilla.bsky.social for entrusting me with this review.

I’ve covered death row cases for nearly a decade and witnessed several executions. What happened to Christa Pike wasn’t an anomaly. It could happen anywhere. With another execution planned for this week in Texas, let me explain why. THREAD 🧵

Thrilled to get a chance to write about THE SHADOW OF THE OBJECT, by Chloe Aridjis, an author whose wide-ranging intellect and imagery hooked me completely when I first reviewed her more than seven years ago. Thanks to @ronslate.bsky.social for the opportunity.

I would just finish reading the book and leave it on a cafe table at the airport for someone else to read. I don’t have a permanent home so can’t keep every book I read. It makes me sad at times, but it also makes me happy that someone else often gets a free book.

Maybe a year ago (less? what is time), Delta announced they planned on experimenting with using machine learning/AI/data mining/whatever to charge different people different fares, essentially theater-type dynamic pricing per person rather than venue. I fear this is the the tip of the ol’ iceberg.

Thanks. I’m very much still horror ignorant, and almost agnostic but trying. I loved Red Rooms, but can’t get myself to sit through something like The Thing. That is all to say that I feel like the slow pace might not necessarily bug me, but good to know the US one is also its own thing.

I saw that the original Japanese Ring is on Criterion now. Having never seen any of them, is that one worth starting with, in your opinion? I see why it would be since it’s the original, but if it’s so bad or something I don’t want to sour myself on the whole idea.

Your assessment makes me curious to pick it back up. I think I watched through…five? Loved 1, was fine with 2, tolerated 3 and 4, and then just bounced and paid no attention. Intrigued that it rebounded, especially because Danes is so so good at playing Carrie.

Every year the folks at the Relay podcast network raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. They’re in the midst of their annual 12-hour podcastathon and very close to their $700,000 goal for the year. So many worthwhile causes these days, but if you can give: relay.experience.stjude.org

Fortuitous wormhole in that I learned starting tomorrow, October 1, there will be a digital archive of the Prague Post, posting one issue per week, 35 years after it originally came out. Will take a while to get to the issues I wrote for, but here’s hoping the Kickstarter picks up a bit:

All such great points, and this item is esp. apt from POV of a book critic, maybe the most endangered species? With vanishingly few spots still covering books, pitching less visible/buzzy titles is so difficult. I focus on translated lit, and wish I had a thicker skin for all the no/ignored emails.

Well, after a basically uninterrupted rewatch of Fleabag over the past two nights, I’d like to amend this and put it in its proper place. Irma Vep is not really a TV show anyway, despite how much I love it.

Not linking to it, but I really wish someone at Variety or any of the other entertainment media outlets could explain to me why the f*#% they keep writing articles about the idiotic AI actress as if it is a) a person and b) something anyone would give a shit about if you didn’t keep bringing it up.

Hahaha. I actually arrived in Prague very eager to learn the language, only to have the Czech translators I worked with at the Prague Post say “Why would you do that? You can’t speak it anywhere else. Plus we all want to practice English.” They weren’t wrong, though I genuinely wish I’d never left.

Cory Oldweiler @coryoldweiler.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Exactly. When I lived there 30 yrs ago, I made an effort to speak the basics/be polite, and it wasn’t harder to do than anywhere else. It was fun to try and pronounce every disorienting word I walked past, and I lived in Jiřak so got lots of practice. Absolutely would’ve kept at it if I’d stayed.

Will be very curious how this is implemented wrt The Ringer’s recently announced Book Club podcast since they’re owned by Spotify. I know Ringer movie/tv podcasts have eliminated or greatly reduce the clips they play, but as you say, discussing a book without quote it is ludicrous.

You can—and should—still read books written and translated by women even though #witmonth is over, and another good one is Elvira Navarro’s excellent collection BLOOD IS DRIPPING ONTO THE COURTYARD, trans. by Christina MacSweeney. I wrote about it for @lareviewofbooks.bsky.social

Spanish author Elvira Navarro’s newly translated story collection captures the unease, decay, and isolation of our post-pandemic world.

All writers need editors, so re-upping from last week with correct title: Because the pub date was abruptly moved forward a full month, I wasn’t able to pitch a review of Rebecca Perry’s MAY WE FEED THE KING, which is spectacular and unique. I hope it gets the attention in the US that it deserves.

I haven’t read them all, but my two favorites are your two and three, so I’m immediately reading Black Bag! (I have a review about Aridjis coming out in a couple weeks and I kind of wanted to make it a comparison/companion piece about Perry too, because they had such a similar, contemplative vibe.)

If I wasn’t reading it for work, it’s the kind of novel that I would have stopped every few paragraphs to reread or just think about. And obviously everyone has different tastes, but I think you’re in for a real treat. MFL’s taste for what she translates is impeccable hahah. Take care.

Effusive post incoming, but having just finished Pol Guasch’s PARADISE BURNS, I’m gobsmacked. Napalm in the Heart is great, but this book just destroyed me. So phenomenally beautiful and sad and tender and creative. Mara Faye Lethem’s translation is every positive superlative I can think of.
