Tyger by SF Said - the two protags are middle eastern kids in an alternate history where the british empire still controls most of the world. Probably a bit of an easy read for middle school, but it has some really beautiful themes of holding onto one’s dignity and heritage in spite of everything

I dont personally see this is as devaluing art - i mean, the comic itself is art made to express feeling - more that you can’t equate making art with something like practical charity. Art is worthy, it helps people, but a food bank helps a lot quicker and materially. Why we need both!

One of mine would perch on the edge of a cup and hang upside down, stretching fully to lick the bottom, even for an empty glass. And fall in a couple times. Birds explore with their mouths and it seems like sometimes a certain material or shape is just fascinating to them

Super thankful to them for that support - also illustrates that it really does require 100% of a home to keep these guys safe. Shouting warnings, sticky notes on doors, fan/window/sitting liquids/chairs/wheels/everything anxiety. Worth it to let them fly, but my god. Be prepared y’all.

When i got my first budgie as a young kid, the household was kind enough to adopt a whole bird-based etiquette. It didn’t prevent every little accident (lukewarm tomato sauce bird bath) and there was one terrifying close call, but we got a good decade or so of free-flying birds and 0 casualties.

Watch the air quality in your home. Birds have extra-efficient respiratory systems which also makes them extra-susceptible to air pollutants and fumes. Never smoke around your bird, don’t burn incense, and be wary of cooking fumes.

For cages, bigger is better, but (supervised) flight time around the house is great for exercise and stimulation. A couple of mine loved to shower with me! Be aware of external doors, windows, uncovered fans, standing water, and of course other pets.
