The rules about when you can take your child out of school can be confusing. The council administers fines, or penalty notices, but the rules on when they should be issued are set by the government and must be followed by headteachers. Here’s what parents and carers need to know.
A graphic about school attendance and fines featuring students walking into a school building.Taking time off during term time?

If your child is aged 5-16 and registered at a school, you’re legally responsible for making sure they attend.

You must request a Leave of Absence from the school.

Headteachers can only approve leave in exceptional circumstances.

Family holidays are not usually considered exceptional and are unlikely to be authorised. When can a fine be issued?

10 sessions of unauthorised absence is equal to 5 school days.

If your child reaches this threshold, their school can refer the absence to Cornwall Council.

The Council checks each referral against the rules before deciding whether to issue a fine. How much is the fine?

For the first time - £80 per parent, per child, if paid within 21 days.

Are you having problems getting your child to school? Schools and the Council aim to support families facing barriers to attendance.

Talk to your child’s school first if you’re struggling.
