Devastated that Unilever is shutting down the Ben and Jerry's foundation, in betrayal of the original merger agreement to allow it to continue to operate without corporate interference. Ben and Jerry's has been a valued funder of our work at @openheartsnyc.bsky.social and countless grassroots orgs.

The Ben & Jerry's Foundation Announces Suspension of Operations Following Funding Cutoff by Unilever/Magnum
After 40 years of supporting grassroots social change, the Foundation will be forced to suspend operations unless it obtains a favorable ruling in its legal challenge
South Burlington, VT, - The Ben & Jerry's Foundation today announced it will suspend operations as of December 31, 2026, unless it obtains a favorable ruling in its legal challenge to its loss of funding. The Foundation is actively pursuing that challenge which is expected to extend into next year and is fully committed to seeing it through. This year-end suspension of operations follows the April 2025 decision by Unilever’s spinoff, The Magnum Ice Cream Company (TMICC), to cut the Foundation's funding and its more recent mandate for the Foundation to vacate its corporate office by today, July 15, 2026. Without these essential resources, the Foundation cannot continue its work.
"After forty years of investing in grassroots organizations working to make the world a more just and better place, TMICC is causing us to shut down at exactly the moment that work is most urgently needed,” said Liz Bankowski, President of the Board of Trustees. “While we’ve lost funding and been removed from our office, we stand firm in the belief that the law and the facts are on our side.”
Since its founding, the Ben & Jerry's Foundation has been unwavering in its mission: to support progressive social change at the grassroots level and to engage Ben & Jerry's employees in that work. Last October, the Foundation celebrated its 40th anniversary, a milestone honoring thousands of small grassroots organizations whose work to advance justice, human dignity, and environmental protection was bolstered by the Foundation's early and often catalytic support. Beyond the national grants program, the withdrawal of funds also affects roughly $600,000 contr…For more than 25 years, following Unilever's acquisition of Ben & Jerry's in 2000, the Foundation operated without corporate interference - a true testament to the integrity of the original merger agreement. That agreement established an Independent Board to oversee the company's product integrity and historic social mission and provided for Foundation funding under an annual formula. The Foundation's independence was never questioned, even when it funded Migrant Justice during a period when that organization was considering a boycott of Ben & Jerry's. Rather than interfering, Ben and Jerry’s, led by the Independent Board, responded by becoming the first dairy company to establish a human rights program designed and built by farm workers themselves.
"The Ben & Jerry's Foundation was a key early funder for our work; they helped us get to where we are today," said Will Lambek, of Migrant Justice. "They believed in the human rights vision of Vermont farmworkers, even when it brought us into direct conflict with the company itself. The Foundation's decision to fund Migrant Justice while we were campaigning against Ben & Jerry's was a testament to its independence, courage, and integrity. They have brought that same integrity to all of their funding decisions over the past forty years."
Everything changed in early 2025, when Unilever restructured its ice cream businesses under a new corporate entity, TMICC. Using a pretextual governance review and a promised but never-disclosed audit, TMICC moved to remove a Foundation trustee and members of Ben and Jerry’s Independent Board and to cut off funding to the Foundation. The Foundation joined the Independent Board in a legal challenge under the merger contract, the case that is currently pending in federal court in New York.
"We are a $6 million foundation,” said Bankowski. “TMICC is a multi-billion-dollar multinational corporation. This is exactly the kind of David and Goliath fight our grantees face every day – and like the…

The Carney speech is indeed very, very good. paulwells.substack.com/p/the-carney...
We knew the story of the international rules-based order was partially false. That the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient. That trade rules were enforced asymmetrically. And that international law applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused or the victim.

This fiction was useful, and American hegemony, in particular, helped provide public goods: open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security, and support for frameworks for resolving disputes.

So, we placed the sign in the window. We participated in the rituals. And largely avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality. This bargain no longer works. Let me be direct: we are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition. Over the past two decades, a series of crises in finance, health, energy, and geopolitics laid bare the risks of extreme global integration.

Ack, sorry, should have verified! Apparently he SAID that, but there's no verification he's actually on the list. I guess it was based on the below post (my screenshot from X). The fact that he's free, pardoned by Trump, is 100% true, however.

Making this graph was "me-search"--I wanted to understand why things felt so HARD for me when I was on the tenure track and had a new baby. Money was tight and so being urged to spend it to make time felt like gaslighting! I was teaching extra to make *money*!! (the opposite conversion).
Picture of me when my son was a baby, in an NYC apartment we couldn't afford, commuting to my job in Philly!

Which is women getting pushed into the labor force by the bottom falling out of the marriage economy, via easier divorce, without a true change in underlying gender roles or attitudes. So what's "The Squeeze"? It's a period in life when time any money pressures hit at the same time for women.
A graph depicting a mountain of childcare and housework time over women's lifecycle, peaking at 35. Income increases and peaks at age 50, the end of the graph.

This is the first graph from the book, which shows that the increase in work hours for women and decrease in housework time (bc of time-saving technology) exactly offset each other. But that increase in childcare time? Unaccounted for. We spend twice as much time with our kids as a generation ago!
Graph showing women's time on market work increasing from 20 to 30 hours a week from 1975 to 2015 while time on housework decreases from 25 to 15. Men's hours stays the same. Time with kids increases from 6 to 12 over the same period.

Really important new work by Carolina Arteaga and Victoria Barone on how the opioid epidemic fueled support for Republicans, identified off of geographic variation in initial Oxycontin marketing exposure. viquibarone.github.io/baronevictor...
In this paper we establish a causal connection between two of the most salient social developments in the United States over the past decades: the opioid epidemic and the rise in partisanship and polarization. Drawing on unsealed records from litigation against Purdue Pharma, we uncover rich geographic variation in the marketing of prescription opioids that serves as a quasi-exogenous source of exposure to the epidemic. We use this variation to document significant increases in drug-related mortality and greater reliance on public transfer programs. This induced economic hardship led to substantial changes in the political landscape of those communities most affected by the opioid epidemic. We estimate that from the mid-2000s to 2020, exposure to the opioid epidemic continuously increased the Republican vote share in House, presidential, and gubernatorial elections. By the 2020 House elections, a one-standard-deviation increase in our measure of exposure led to a 4.6 percentage point increase in the Republican vote share. This higher vote share in the House translated into Republicans winning additional seats from 2012 until 2020.

The New Yorker's September cover is going to stay with me for a long time. "Who takes care of the children of the people who take care of your children" is a question I implore everyone who has the means to pay for private childcare to ask themselves.
A Black woman sits on a playground bench holding a white toddler. She shows an image of a young Black man, presumably her son, in a graduation gown to a brown-skinned woman standing next to her, holding a pink scooter, apparently caring for the helmeted red-headed girl, also white, running toward the playground.
