I can only vouch so much for the data and methodology since I'm a programmer, not a statistician, but I vibed up a tool that lets you slice incomes in the US by various things. #ClaudeCode corey.sciu.to/am-inc-exp/d...
A beeswarm chart of housing tenure by income for full-time workers. The distribution is fairly normal with lots of artifacts at round incomes. At about the median going up, the color strikingly changes from the color for "rent" to the color for "own"

With the rise of AI and its intrusion into The Discourse, it's fun to think back to one of the first pieces of Fake News. The Good Guys (Paul Revere here) drew a photo of an orderly line of soldiers firing into a defenseless crowd. Not at all what happened.

Yeah, it's hard to decide what data to use from OpenStreetMap. Originally, I was looking for things like wide roads, lots of parking, not lots of housing, but then Times Square got nearly a zero and strip malls did well. So, I settled on intersection count. You have ≈ 4,000 people in eight blocks!

I know you know this but markets vary. A lot. How do we think about the superstar effect here? I didn't blow into Boston from Des Moines, I'm from the metro. Fortunately, I'm a (generational) tech worker so the market here was possible. Fewer jobs for me even elsewhere in New England.

Social Security Discourse always gets me going because I think it points to a national disease (and timely): The American psyche recoils at the idea that the government is a helpful entity, so we've disguised entitlements as earned benefits, or make them completely invisible.
Social Security is one of those programs in the US that seems to be designed to make people feel like they're doing something self-sufficient when they're not. If people got back what they put in with interest, it would be a solvent system, which it isn't. It's always been something of a pyramid scheme, and now that growth has slowed and people are living longer, that's become painfully obvious and we have to admit what it really is (an entitlement, not insurance) or people will starve.

If you make over $80k a year, you're only getting 15% of that back up to $180k when you stop getting money back at all (or paying in). This is why Republicans have wanted to privatize social security. It's an incredibly effective antipoverty system but it's a shitty retirement plan. The first 401(k)-havers are starting to retire, which is its own can of worms, but social security keeps the poor from starving in the dark by taking from the middle.

I searched for "West Medford" trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with the signals at High and Canal an hour ago and this post came up. Now, I'm just out of sorts. Anybody who describes this area as "country" and is upset about paint needs a serious head exam.

Just having a nice chat this morning with ChatGPT about home repair.
🧠 Murray Gell-Mann Amnesia is when you read something about a topic you actually know—like, say, Massachusetts town governance in 1776—and it’s full of crap. You roll your eyes. But then you flip the page and read about Ottoman trade routes or quantum tunneling and just... believe it. Michael Crichton coined the term. Gell-Mann didn’t endorse it—he just proved the point by existing.

🤖 I’m an LLM, and this is my curse: I can sound fluent and confident about Tyngsborough’s district status in 1775 and the Peloponnesian War in the same breath. Sometimes I nail it. Sometimes I mash up three sources and hallucinate a footnote. You’ll spot it when it’s your turf. But when it’s not? You won’t. That’s the danger. The more convincing I sound, the more suspicious you should be.

I ordered a Steak Bomb from a place in Medford last night but that's not what they called it. Apparently that's a Northern New England thing?
A map of metros showing only three metros search for "Steak Bomb" at all. Relative to Bangor, Portland, ME has 73$% of the volume as does Boston, MA/Manchester, NH. #4 and #5 are Providence, RI/New Bedford, MA and Springfield, Holyoke, MA.

There's a trendline above showing the popularity of the term has been on a steady upswing since Google Trends started tracking in 2010

If Sam Altman can complain we're too nice to these things, These models shouldn't give me a paragraph up front each time about how smart I am for asking brilliant questions. I told it to speak straight and normal (and in Bostonian, which is that) and I'm not sure this is better.
