i'm planning on bringing back paid subscriptions to the newsletter in November, with two pieces per month paywalled, along with sections of the Sunday recommendations post throwing to readers: what have been your favourite kinds of writing, posts, etc, on the site to date? the most "valuable"?

two stray Digger thoughts: - at one point i got annoyed because it seemed like the movie was metatextually arguing it was unfunny on purpose, and then i realized that no, it *does* think it's funny, which is so much worse - Tom Cruise should find a cave and hibernate for a decade

i believe genocide has been committed in Gaza, “genocidal acts,” etc, but i’m theoretically open to the idea that some genuinely see the situation differently, i’ll hear out the argument except that just about everyone i encounter who “sees it differently” also ends up caping for war crimes huh!

“Each piece of information would, if confirmed, surely point to a war crime, but the only overarching pattern is Israel’s willingness to loosen to a sickening degree its rules of engagement and warfare.“ it fails to prove a war crime… by establishing a pattern of war crimes???

wild that this guy outlines how the movie is an almost perfect illustration of “banality of evil” in action, but sees that as a “muddled” message because apparently he disagrees with the idea that cogs in the machine reflect the ideological goals of the machine.

Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 30/09/2026
it’d be easier to respect this writer if he just said outright, “I do not think Israel is committing genocide, and the only thing wrong with Israel’s actions is scale and rhetorical callousness, and suggestions otherwise distract from criticism of Netanyahu.”

just watched Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel's 2017 short After School Knife Fight, shot by La Gradiva director Marine Atlan, and this shot where light from an iPhone is very brazenly faked with proper light source kinda just knocked me right the hell out

fwiw, this is what Harari says on the trans allegory specifically, but also other readings (he also supports reading it as an epidemic, but leaves that open too). it's arguable a movie so open renders itself meaningless, but movies like that also tend to age well. www.indiewire.com/features/int...
010
Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 29/09/2026
oh he definitely knows the territory he's playing in (and i don't think the movie's De Palmaisms are an accident), but the film itself plays everything straight rather than bend to any allegory. "What if this happened? How would people deal with it?" it's not a bottomless movie, but it's open.
110
Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 29/09/2026
yeah, i really just don’t think it allegorizes anything. the connections the audience makes are our own. even calling it a mini-epidemic assumes too much allegory. it’s a single being doing this to all these people. i’ll add, i was sort of mixed on it initially, and then it just never left my mind.
110
Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 29/09/2026
i’ll push back and say it’s a mistake to think about the film as an allegory. it’s much more situational than that, with characters forced to face their own psychological realities. haven’t stopped thinking about David in Eva’s body watching his mother comfort Malia in his body.

they don't respond to my imaginary pitches!

Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 29/09/2026
- for the sake of clarity, use a pitch name only in top row of that group, or whichever outlet actually accepts (i like to move that row to the top of the heap) - Invoice Tracker must be filled manually - if another outlet accepts a pitch, or it's been too long, i'll change No Response to Rejected

a few notes: - each worksheet has information overlapping with the next, with functions literally linking the first two sheets - columns A to G in Writing Tracker autopopulate with items from Pitch Tracker when "accepted" (you may need to manually move corresponding cells in remaining WT columns)

maybe, but i'm pretty sure Lee's always been a pretty typical Wilson Heights left-liberal, probably mostly voted a combo of Liberal and NDP all his life. that was his milieu. Israel broke a lot of those people's brains.

in fact, i know this isn't limited to Toronto, because Tony Kushner told me this about the situation in New York: www.gq.com/story/tony-k...
interview screenshot:

Corey: I have also heard family say just the most appalling things imaginable lately. I’m sure you’ve had conversations with at least some people like that.

Kushner: Well, we’ve just gone through the, um— [Kushner points to his Zohran Mamdani campaign button].

Corey: Yes. Right.

Kushner: The responses that I got wearing that pin. I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan and friends of mine…. I’ve lost a few friends over Gaza, and now I think a couple of friends over Mamdani.Corey: Over Mamdani? No way.

Kushner: Oh, yeah. Well, these are people who are otherwise completely rational, who genuinely believe that he’s going to move in and install sharia law and kill all the Jews. I mean, it’s psychotic. What they’re doing is looking at this South Asian guy and thinking, Ooh, I don’t like that. Jews should never.

i knew it was a thing a couple years back when i understood that A LOT of Jewish families were taking their kids out of public schools
130
Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 28/09/2026
i'm not talking about normal political bubble stuff where Jews are kinda skeptical of a particular politician or political leaning. i'm talking a fully fantastical, irrational, but very serious fear. to them, Chow is why they're taking their kids out of public school. it's completely crazy.
3201
Corey Atad @coreyatad.com · 28/09/2026
it's been a thing for a long time. even my mom is like "I would never vote for Chow. She's scary and hates Jews." and when i ask where she got that idea, she says she reads it and hears it everywhere, but the only thing she could cite was City Hall at one point waving the flag of Palestine?!?
