As #SuicidePreventionMonth ends, I’m reflecting on how much happens behind the scenes to make this work possible. I’m grateful for everyone I’m lucky to work with, and those who continue to show up, speak up, volunteer, walk, donate, advocate, and help move suicide prevention forward all year long.

So proud that this program has gotten this recognition. Working with the advisory committee to lead the evaluation of L.E.T.S. Save Lives has been a career highlight. A powerful example of community-driven, culturally responsive suicide prevention.

Since no one asked, here’s some #RealHousewives style taglines for researchers. Quote/Reply w yours “I collect data, run analyses, and always control for drama.” “Research is my job, but proving you wrong is my passion.” “My receipts aren’t just gossip, they’re peer-reviewed.” #Research #Academia

Here are some thoughts I put together! bsky.app/profile/corb...

6.) It gets easier. As you establish yourself as a researcher, you become more confident in your expertise and skillset. Imposter syndrome will likely always be a thing, but it does get easier as time goes on. You got this!!

Corbin J. Standley, PhD @corbinstandley.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
5.) Be kind, particularly in peer review. Academia is hard and kindness goes a long way. Your job in a peer review is not to sound smarter than the authors, but to collaborate on a contribution to science. Lead with kindness.
182
Corbin J. Standley, PhD @corbinstandley.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
4.) Have a strategy for handling rejection. There’s going to be a lot of it and how your handle it will make a difference. For me, taking some time to vent and process before responding or revising is crucial. Then break down the feedback into manageable chunks and move forward.
141
Corbin J. Standley, PhD @corbinstandley.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
3.) Learn to say no. This is easier said than done, but there will be many demands on your time, and increasingly so as you advance in your program. Being able to prioritize projects and opportunities and turn down some will be a lifesaver. Take your time and value your time.
151
Corbin J. Standley, PhD @corbinstandley.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
2.) Ask questions. Your job isn’t to know everything or to be the smartest person in the room. Your job is to learn and apply skills. Chances are, others are also confused or have the same question. Ask away!
130
Corbin J. Standley, PhD @corbinstandley.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
1.) Others’ successes are not your failures. Be happy for your colleagues’ successes (publications, awards, grants, etc.) and try not to compare yourself too much or internalize others’ successes as an evaluation of your own self-worth.

Suicide prevention depends on good science. A proposed OMB rule would impact suicide research by politicizing federal grant decisions, making it easier to terminate research funding, and restricting research on disparities. Comments close on 7/13 Speak up: afsp.quorum.us/campaign/fed...
