Long long ago in the pre-pandemic times, I ran a homebrew #ttrpg called Hocus, where you played supernatural investigators stopping the world from ending in a few different ways. Well, two nights ago I had a reboot, with new players and an updated system! The silliness has remained, of course.

As a DM, I recycle sooo much! My group today wandered into a city they weren't supposed to be at yet, so I populated it with NPCs from another campaign. Instantly, I had personalities, voices, and motivations all ready! As a player, I always try to make a new character.

In a story where money is an important thing, there should be an economy. If all the characters are either noble and get money from taxes or inheritance or poor and can only steal, who's making the money? Maybe the lives of office workers didn't make it to the final draft of this adventure novel...

Oh my goodness, adopted families. Two of my players are brothers, and they each play brothers in the campaign. A family of minotaurs adopted a gnome, and they dynamic of an adopted magical kid who is a hundred years older than his family of barbarians is just SO FUN.

I love it when a character has a healthy relationship with a parent. There's something really fun about role-playing "Hey guys, my dad sent us pumpkin bread, with really badly drawn pictures of us on a card!" As a parent, it's probably one of those "playing your fantasy" things, but adulted!

4e Monster Manual. Every monster page gives you the abilities (instead of having to go look up spells), tells you what each monster is like, gives you tactics that can help the monsters fight optimally, and has examples of encounter groups. I still look at it for inspiration and ideas!

I made it so that magical skills worked, you only rolled to see how closely it worked to how you wanted! Nothing ever happened that was outright harmful to you, just made situations a lot more interesting! It was also fun to see how my table planned around their possible errant rolls!

Got WAY too excited to play as a player and not a gamemaster, and made Lhouie (short for Silhouette)! She fights monsters and writes about it and it's published in tabloid magazines for normal folks to laugh about! She is equally happy to make friends or fight enemies! She also loves sharks.

What I like is that you are teenagers entrusted to protect a world that you are isolated from, and all you have is each other. I hope it explores the idea of a life that matters to the world set against a life that is personally fulfilling. And also: Robot fights woohoo! Remote base building yay!

I agree, even though I'm bad at doing this. It's my campaign, and I realized I can have my players spend time building a fantasy horse ranch. Not so it can be set ablaze by liches riding dragons riding dracoliches, but just because I can make things as pleasant as I damn well want!

Don't Stop, by Innerpartysystem, to get into character for Ray Winters, who believes that his wealth can solve every problem. It does solve a lot, as he's one of the main protagonists for a while until they have a falling-out, and without friends, no one's around to call him out on his BS.

For what it's worth, I made the world to be intentionally friendly and light-hearted! I'm nearly done with my post-apocalyptic fantasy campaign where our heroes are fighting off an extradimensional invasion looking to conquer a disease-wracked world. So I'm excited for something more whimsical!

Funny you should ask, in my #FadesATU game, resurrection is immediate, and then you're shot back down to the planet from your ship! It's more inconvenient than anything, because your rivals are also immortal instant-respawn Fades, and you want to get to the treasure first, doggone it!

I'm a big fan of sieges. You're protecting a unicorn foal, the first in centuries. Your duty is to fend off a cult who want to exploit the poor baby unicorn. More difficulty: you have to escort a veterinarian to help. Less difficulty: the unicorn buffs you with magic.

Everyone loves rogues, but there needs to be SOME way of making legitimate money! Lots of stories set themselves up as "Nobles have boatloads of money, and our heroes scam and steal money from nobles." Unless we see money gained and spent in normal ways, its value doesn't feel like anything!

I had an experience where I was the only one who made a backstory, so my character was the only one whose NPC friends were getting endangered and getting dead. 💔 I don't have the heart to kill NPCs my players make. The ones I make, though, are always slated for disaster!

The best fights are the ones where the heroes solve it in some crazy crazy way that you didn't expect! My adventurers still carry around a dragon that they polymorphed into a pigeon and then turned to stone, as a conversation piece and as a one-time-use BIG distraction maker!
