I am EXTREMELY proud of Keplar for *not bolting,* for trusting me to protect him in this anxious situation where he was so horribly vulnerable. I'm especially proud that he didn't bolt when I verbally hazed the bear, staying with me instead. He's such a good little cat!❤️❤️❤️🐾

My five year old shorthaired dark blue tuxedo kitty Keplar, just a few minutes after encountering a wild black bear while we were out for a morning walk. He sits hyperalert beside me on wooden steps with a blue tarp behind him, his yellow eyes wide as he stares off-screen, watching keenly for any sign of the bear's unwelcome return.

The one still photo that I took of the black bear, which just looks like a large lump of black fur beyond a shelf sprinkled with autumn leaves and paint cans. It is digging at the base of a fence post and beyond it is a small cabin with a turquoise metal roof.

In which Keplar & I encountered an unwelcome neighbour in our yard, earlier this week. We've never actually had bear issues before & this black bear seems very young, potentially newly seperated from their mom. This bear's habituated behaviour is really sad, 'cus it's gonna get them shot. ☹️

This is my neighbour, Tommy, whom I have been looking after for his humom, who is off recovering from a life saving kidney transplant. (Her sister donated her a new one!) He's a very purry guy who battles raccoons! Hard to believe that sitting on a couch beside a sleeping cat is work haha. 😂❤️❤️❤️🐾

Evacuation order lifted! We got back yesterday night & we've already seen loads of the wildlife which decided to move in while most humans were absent. Keplar found plenty of novel sniffs to smell on the dried up lake bed this morning; other area lakes are still at full pool. ☹️

I just realized that my parents' wedding anniversary is tomorrow... I really miss having both of them. I miss how they used to plan a super special adventure for their anniversary like horseback riding in the mountains. I even miss their PDA, how sweet they were together. I miss my mom's hugs. Her.💔

I really missed cat cuddles; usually my kitties sleep with me every night but they understandably haven't wanted to lately. I think it helps that yesterday I figured out what was wrong with my fish's air conditioner - the exhaust fan got disconnected somehow so the house is just much nicer!🥹❤️❤️❤️

They've both nabbed themselves one of my legs to snuggle with; they have their own personal leg. 🥹 (This was the first properly cool night that we have had since we were evacuated so my kitties haven't been very cuddly until today. It feels so good to have a break from this wretched heat & smoke.)

Me, in the midst of uploading my Regal Blue Tang art to Redbubble: "Oh gods, I have to tag this as 'Dory fish' don't I? Ngn." (I loved Regal Blue Tangs before Finding Nemo ever came out; fun fact.) NOTE: Regal Blue Tangs are not nano fish, they need larger aquariums than most folks want.

I just got home from being evacuated in the dark due to TWO wildfires & it was a nightmare but still not as much of a nightmare as all the slag that we went through with my mom dying. Keplar had the longest car ride of his life (sang the song of his ancestors,) & Casper was simply a good boy.

Here are my contributions to this year's Polar Lights zine which is absolutely wonderful & full of art from folks who are absolutely epic.❤️❤️❤️ ⚠️🦭UPDATE: sadly, since I finished the infocomic about them, bearded seals are now classed as Endangered by the ICUN. 😵‍💫

Bearded seals are named for their voluminous whiskers.

Male bearded seals attract their bearded ladies by singing! Their otherworldly songs can be heard as far away as 20 km/12.4 miles. Males also sing to defend their territories.

(A male bearded seal sings "Ooooooooo...." to which a female on an iceflow responds "I'm STILL not interested, Harold." Poor Harold is sad about this.

Unlike most seal pups, which may take weeks to even months to approach the water much less swim in it, bearded seal pups can swim within mere hours of birth, and they are weaned after only 24 days!

(A glaring mama bearded seal floats between her baby pup in the water and a heavily disappointed polar bear on an iceflow, exclaiming "Take that, stupid bear! My baby ain't no helpless snack!")

Bearded seals are also faster swimmers than polar bears.

Except for moms with pups, bearded seals are solitary, and sleep either lounging on ice flows or fliating vertically in the water like a buoy... which probably creeps out other arctic wildlife.

(Two arctic foxes perched on an iceflow look super leery of a nearby floating bearded seal. One of the foxes wonders "Is... is it asleep?!" to which the other fox replies "I can't tell!"

Yesterday my reef as an ecosystem turned 3 years old. 🏆🪸 I'm extremely proud of myself for pushing on through the challenges that I have faced in keeping my reef, & I am always working to improve my aquatic husbandry & care. Most new reefers fail in their first year but I've kept going.❤️❤️❤️🐠

Last night we had what might be our last campfire for the year given that full fire ban starts this Friday (which is fine!) & I'm honestly a bit stunned that it didn't start sooner given the state of drought that we're in. Our lake looks like it usually does in SEPTEMBER, yet it's July.

A new air conditioner was acquired! Unfortunately it did cost $100 more than expected but thanks to my Dad/landlord being an awesome dude I was able to get it & now my reef if back to a safe/reasonable temperature (25.5°C.) But... it looks like the heatwave killed my cleaner wrasse, Ribbon. 😞

Hehe here's one more of Keplar being beautiful, this time on the beach, just because! Because Avian Flu is very transmissable to kitties & our lake has many ducks, he isn't allowed to drink lake water/go near bird poop but he enjoys birdwatching under our grand old willow tree.❤️❤️❤️🐾

I have irrigation again!!! 🥹 No more exhausting hauling buckets for hours every evening to water my food forest! No more (hopefully) weird dry tasting black currents! More happy tomatos and rose bushes! Yiss!❤️❤️❤️
