I’ve spent weekends working on personal projects and switching off Claude to remind myself of the love for this job. Today is the first day at work I’ve wheeled it back completely and I’m almost rediscovering a codebase I’ve actively been working on for almost a year. My skills have become BLUNT.

Software Engineering was a job that settled my inner monologues while I worked, because my brain was being maxed out all day. But now that voice is unchallenged, and back talking to me, and it’s asking me questions I don’t want to answer. Anxiety is back on the menu.

AI is like going on antidepressants, sure it squashes the darkest lows of the role, but it’s stolen the amazing highs from great accomplishments. It’s just living in a comfortably numb middle, and when you sit there for 8 hours a day, your brain now wonders.

But this was the good part of it, I used my brain, thought through tough problems sometimes with no answer, devs used to write articles on those problems we solved to help others. It’s like overcoming a boss in Dark Souls, the following high that came from surmounting the challenge was addictive.

So for the last 8 weeks as part of the crunch, I’ve been using it exclusively to get all my work over the line, I’m now part of the modern pipeline. Using Claude has changed the role of software engineer, it was all about problem solving; you had intense highs followed by blistering lows

So while I can sit here and not be pressured to use it, features that would take a week maybe two without AI, can be spun up in a day, maybe two. So by abstaining, your output maintains the old world speed, while your team is on lightspeed, it looks like you’re dropping the ball or not contributing

The general answer is “just don’t use it”, and for a very long time I didn’t, to date there hasn’t been a directive at work to use it, they’ve just provided us all access. The shift’s been fast, even the most staunch sceptics moved over to it, exacerbated recently by a significant crunch deadline
